1920s Oahu parlor guitar made by Stromberg-Voisinet slot head neck joins at 12th fret
1935 Supertone archtop acoustic made by Harmony
1956 Gibson ES-175D archtop electric two P90s
late 50s/early sixties Harmony Stratotone hollow one single coil no f holes
50s National lap steel made by Valco
mid-60s Alamo hollowbody one single coil no f holes
1967 Airline lap steel made by Valco
late 60s Kay solidbody one single coil possibly Truetone brand made by Kay
1970 Harmony Rebel hollowbody two DeArmonds greenburst with whammy bar
1970s Takamine F307S acoustic flattop OOO-sized Martin copy solid spruce top
late 70s/early 80s Electra Vulcan MPC solidbody two humbuckers built in effects
early 80s Peavey T-60 solidbody two humbuckings
recent Fender 52 reissue Telecaster
recent Gibson Firebird V
recent Gretsch Country Classic hollowbody two Filtertrons Bigsby real f holes
recent Dean Stylist Standard archtop two humbuckings f holes Bigsby
recent Heritage H575 archtop hollowbody single cutaway two humbuckings trapeze tailpiece
recent Heritage H137 solidbody single Lollar P90 TV yellow
recent Tokai Love Rock solidbody single P90 TV yellow made in Japan Tokai Custom Shop
recent Danelectro Hodad hollowbody no f holes four single coil lipstick pickups
recent Brownsville Thug hollowbody two single coils no f holes
recent Art & Lutherie AMI parlor acoustic small body neck joins at 12th fret
recent Fender lap steel

I also have an Aria solidbody, two humbuckings, bolt neck, from the eighties. It needs a little work and maybe a pickup swap. I didn't list it in the above because it is not in playable condition currently. Other than that Aria all of the guitars are in good playable condition.

I found out from experimenting that those older guitars like big heavy strings to get the best tones out of them. The Stratotone, for example, played like a toy with normal electric guitar strings on it. But I put some heavy ribbon wounds with a wound third on it and it plays and sounds like a real guitar. The Alamo is in need of a switch to heavier strings soon.

They all get played fairly regularly, especially the older ones. On gigs I usually take the Gretsch Country Classic and a solidbody, either the Peavey T-60 or the Heritage H137. On sit down gigs or in restaurants and private parties I take the Heritage H575 or the 1956 ES-175D. When I play rocksorz I play the Firebird or the Tokai or Heritage H137. When I am playing hardcore country I play the Telecaster. And all the others get recorded with or practiced on around the house. And I use most of the older guitars for playing music from back in the day, dogg.

I might add a resonator guitar later on when I find a good old one that I can afford. And I will probably always pick up older guitars at good prices when I find them. But I am pretty darn pleased with my current selection of guitars and guitar accessories.

I must say, that is one nice collection. I'm actually working on adding a new guitar to my "collection". Either a joe pass emporer II or the Artcore that is 750 bucks. At this point getting a hollow body is something I really need to do.

If you want to start off really good on an archtop save up around $1500 and get a used Heritage H575. The Emperor II is decent, nothing wrong with it. And I would choose that over any Artcore. But that extra money you might have to spend on a Heritage is well worth it. That's the real sound right there.

It's a funky guitar, very similar to a recent Danelectro. It plays well and has a nasal twang to it. For what it is it is a decent guitar.

A newer ES-335 will cost alot more than a Heritage. I have played an ES-137 and didn't like it as much as my Heritage.

My Gibson ES-175 from 1956 is the ultimate jazz box for me. But it was alot more than a brand new ES-335 or ES-175.

MisterHat, that is an extremely impressive collection. Excellent jazz-boxes, some very interesting niche's, and some great work-horses. Truly a fine collection! cheers.gif

Wow, I knew there was going to be some downsizing but I didn't realise Rick was down to four already. Still, think of all the fun that's to be had re-accumulating.

The JP Emperor is WAY better in tone and feel than any Ibanez Artcore. Artcores really stick it to ya w/ crappy pickups and pots. Volume and tone ctrl is non-existent on an Artcore unless it's muddy and muddier tone.

We had a student w/ an Artcore in our jazz guitar ensemble and it got to the point that everyone told him either to get another guitar or play w/ an amplified acoustic because his guitar would just outright ruin the tune we were playing. You couldn't pay me to buy an Artcore.

You can click here and see my collection:
