That's basically a question of hard vs. softer woods. The spruce (hard) will be brighter and generaly have more volume, wheras the cedar will be more mellow and not so bright. Since cedar is a softer wood, it is a bit more prone to nicks and dents, but, if you just use caution both of the woods will age well. Just make sure you do get solid wood, laminated wood may sound good, but will never sound any better, solid wood, when it is played extensivly over time (6 months to 2 years), wil begin to "open up".

My beautiful Taylor is already "opening up" just a bit, but enough to know the difference and its not even a year old yet. I personally like Sitka Spruce tops!

cedar produces a warmer, rounder sound whereas spruce tops produce a very bright, clear sound.

both will age well if they're solid tops.

I like a natural looking finish, and all the spruce I saw was pretty shiny, and no I ain't a tree hugger Dad biggrin.gif. I went for cedar, I like the look but if all the dings and scratches add character, my cedar guitar is going to have a hell of a lot of it.

Man I got more dings and scratched in it in 3 months, than what my hard wood Ibanez has gotten in 10 years.

If ya wanna keep it purdy better get some hard wood, iffn ya like all that character, get some cedar.

Personnally cedar is the only choice, warmer big basses bright tops. Spruce tends to be a lot tighter more mids and tops.

Okie, are you sure about that? Now that I think of it, that jerky did have a little after-taste of soybeans, wheat-germ and bean-sprouts! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I can't help it. I like my guitars like I like my cars.....big and shiny. ha!

Damn, Dad.....how could you? I'm hurt......vegetarian, ain't no stinkin vegetarians round here. I'm surrounded by dead animals and fish hangin on the walls and settin' on the floor, freezer full of deer, fish, wild hog, duck.

I'm a natural born killer, kill it and grill it, just like that crazy yankee from up your way says.

You know Ted don't ya?

Now lets see.........should I be sendin' somma that jerky up there to ole Dad next year or not? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif hummmmmm?

Well I suppose if ya wanna call some crushed pepper and a tad a garlic and those secret spices vegetables........but there's mostly muscle in there, butt muscle, I did trim around the hole, or maybe I didn't. Yep, that's gotta be the problem right there, musta been a soybean in that little bucks asshole.
