I'd just turned 15 years old when this eponymously titled debut album was released, and it changed my life. I remember running home from the record store to play it, full of anticipation. I'm sitting here now at 30 years old, listening to the same album, this time comfortable in the knowledge of what i'm getting.
Look at it in context, the charts of those days were full of Stock/aitken/Waterman parodies of each other, and there was a huge void left by the demise of the Smiths. Yuppies were snorting their final lines of the decade and acid house emerged from the underground into the main stream. Then along came the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays, showing us that the world would never be the same again.
Those who like to pigeonhole would no doubt stick an indie label on this and scribble "melodic guitar rock with psychedelic '60s overtones" somewhere in the margins. Although technically they would be right, it is worth remembering that you would technically be right if you described the Sistine Chapel Ceiling as "a big religious painting."
John Squire's sublime guitar cascades over the bass guitar of Mani as Reni shows us what he can do with a drum kit without resorting to over indulgant drum solos. Ian Brown could not be classed as a good singer, but these four guys together were something special - and they knew it. Symbolism would be a constant reference with the Stone Roses and they were our gang fighting the good fight on our behalf but with blissful music. They once claimed the name "The Stone Roses"
came from the contrast of hard and soft like their beautiful music with vitriolic lyrics.
If you own this album you'll know what i'm talking about. If you don't own it, I urge you to go out and buy a copy.
Noel and Liam gallacher liked them so much, they went out and started their own band... what Oasis have done for us remains a mystery to me though. The Beatles and the Roses mixed together, whilst not unpleasant, was nothing new.
With thanks to Matt Pomroy for additional material.
