"Semi acoustic"... Well the way I see it, it's either an acoustic or it's not. No in between crap...

I owned one and resold it. My Takamine is so much better.
I hated the sound, the looks, I hated everything about the Ovation. As well, they're bound to break as they age because the wooden top will stretch out while the graphite bowl (obviously) won't. In my opinion, people are better off with full-wood acoustics (may they have electrics mounted or not) than with an Ovation. But then again, that's just my opinion to which I am entitled.

I don't have an ovation...but i do have an ovation body/style guitar..(a copy-cat). I do like how it's a lot thinner than other acoustics..making it easier to carry around..and I find it easy to play and jam with.
I've been able to play ovations at shops, and the higher end ovations do sound great. But, the one that I have isn't as bassy as I'd like..and the amplification of the acoustics isn't as loud as my other guitars. But overall, Ovations are fairly good guitars with a feel that might take a little while to get used to. If you ever see one at a shop, pick it up n try that baby out.

I have played one and it was surprising. I thought it wouldn't sound/play that good but it ended up sounding ok. Needless to say this was an upper end model, with pearl inlays I think, but even that one had issues with it sliding off of my leg...which is very very annoying.
Honestly, that is one of the main reasons I don't like them...they are just uncomfortable to play.
But as for sound it sounded good, compariable to a bright sounding all wood guitar.

They might be the most reliable acoustic-electric guitars available, but they are no good for fingerpicking or any kind of folk guitar. I dont have anything against them but they aren't my thing.
Indeedy-o, that's me main reason for disliking them too. That, and the bloody sliding off me leg while playing sitting down.

Not sure how you're comparing an acoustic guitar to a strat....
Ovations seem to bring out strong opinions in guitarists: they either really like them or really hate them. I've played a few briefly. Didn't do anything for me. They remind me of Fender acoustics--they're not poorly made, but the feel and tone is uninspired. And there's something about that plastic bowl-shaped back that doesn't set well with me.

i've owned 2, and think they are great guitars. i'd wouldn't sell or trade mine, just add to the collection.
the sliding off the leg is fixed by using a strap.
a squareback has better tone acoustically, but an ovation gets the nod when plugged in.
the rounded neck is more like an electric, and i think for anyone who wants to play their acoustic like an electric, ovation is the way to go. the neck is to narrow, however, for any meaningful finger pickin.
oh how i wish for an Adamas 6 string and 12 string.

I noticed at the guitar store that Taylor has a model that had a plastic back too...it looked a lot better(not as pear shaped) so maybe the slipping off of the lap wouldn't be there...
I hope not all acoustics will be made like that...fusing plastic and wood can't last as long as wood on wood.

I wouldn't mind as long as my Takamine aged well.
