I saw Matt Nathanson while he was on tour with Howie Day and he played a "funky" cover of stayin alive which was pretty cool. Listen to some of his live stuff, he says he likes the funk.

As I am a bit of a funk player myself, I will try to help.

Funk, or at least how I think of it, is more of a rhythmic expression that a tonal one. Funk is largely based around 16th notes and rests in between them.

I would recommend jazz chords. They sound really good when put into a funky rhythm.

I have a book on all the styles of funk, so I will research it some more and reply later.

play 7ths and 13ths use diminished chords for lots of modulation, and precussive rhythym. That's what I'd do, anyways.

Slid 9ths can work sometimes. For example sliding to C9 X32333 either up from X21222 (B9) or down from X43444 (C#9). This was a biggy for James Brown and many others (or even just the partial chord XXX222 to XXX333) Another good funk chord is to hammer to the I-7 from the IV. For example, hold and play this (as a barre-chord using index and ring fingers to barre both the 5th and 7th frets on strings 1,2,3,4) X07775 (which is a D-chord) and then play this X05655 by strumming the barred X05555 and as you do, quickly hammering that 3rd string note XXX3XX with your middle finger (completing the A7 cord X05655). Another chord, used similarly to the "slid-9ths" example above is the "slid I-7#9" This is a C7#9...X3234X. It (or other 7#9s) can be slid to from above or below, or gone into from the regular 9 (first example again) into the 7#9 form on the adjoining fret. The rhythm is the key to playing funk as much as (if not more than) anything else. Anyway, there are a few more ideas.
