I've been doing a lot of thinking and, because of my inability to get on with potential bandmates and also cos I want to get a bit more vocal than is possible in the kind of band NI teenagers want to be in, I'm going to try some solo acoustic sets.

This is a prospect that makes me quiver with fear slightly, but I've got a rough setlist worked out. Only problem is, they're all pretty slow. I can't think of any uptempo songs that would work with just me and an acoustic. So?

I might play a couple of songs at the pub down the road at some point for starters, and I'm going to try to support some other acoustic/rock/folky type bands. So what else can I play? I've already got some Dar, Hayden, and Damien Rice (all discovered on GTU biggrin.gif ) , but I'd like anything that can perhaps get people slightly excited as well.

Ugh... I've talked enough.

That's exactly what I did a while back. If you want a job doing you gotta do it yourself, right?

Some up-beat stuff I play:

John Lee Hooker - Boom Boom
Robert Johnson - Crossroad Blues
Hendrix - Voodoo Chile

Alright so I only play bluesy stuff, but trust me JLH goes down a treat every time.

I have never heard of him and his stuff seemed really slow...is it any good?

As far as I'm aware, "O" is Damo's main album type thing. His stuff is really good from my direction, but if you've heard "I Remember", "Cheers Darlin'", "Eskimo" and you didn't like them ... Well, firstly I'll be quite surprised, and secondly I would suggest that you listen to something else, along the lines of the fast Food Rockers.

trippenit - Woman Like a Man is a great song, but to me it's all about the two harmony voices, which I don't have. Drums feel fairly essential too.

I guess I'm looking for something with a lot of melody in the voice so I could try something more driving/percussive on the guitar. And something interesting, and a bit different. I wonder how Pixies would go down...

Take any up-beat song you know and try and do an acoustic adaption of it - that's where a lot of my set comes from. The crowd really appeciates it when you play them a song they know well, but in a style they wouldn't usually associate with it.

Always good idea. But do a Gavin? unsure.gif

Yeah anyway try and find songs that sound great with just acoustic guitar.

Hmmm...

Radiohead got some songs
Eagles got alot
Oasis

These bands have done acoustic sets so I guess find bands that have done acoustic sets and pick the songs you would like to play and the ones you can pull off vocally.

Good luck and kick some ass! biggrin.gif

I have a live version of it with no drums, and it sounds excellent. Hard to sing though.

Pixies would be pretty hard to pull off on acoustic, but definetly worth it if you got it down. Gigantic would be cool, up beat and all, id say U-Mass would translate well, and the lyrics are excellent and easy to sing. Make sure you scream 'it's educational' though!
