My ear has gotten pretty good at hearing things that ain't quite right while I'm playin'. I've noticed that when some strings are in tune when played open, they are off a tad at the frets....bugs the ###### outta me.....I've been tunin' so they are right on at the frets and off a tad in the open position, and that helps.

Any suggestions?

It's all about the guitar, the frets are off slightly. What kind of guitar do you have. I had this problem with my mandolin, because it is a cheap piece of ######. The only way to fix it would be to buy a better guitar.

Guess that's what I get for bein tone deaf when I bought it.

Maybe that's why ole Dad likes those Gibsons....better start savin....wonder how much trade ya get on a Seagull?

Depending on how much money you want to spend and how much you like the guitar you can take it to a repairman (luthier) and have the intonation checked and adjusted. Cost will be around $70-100. Cheaper than buying a new guitar. Even a "cheapish" guitar should still be somewhat in tune when you play it. From what you've described it sounds like an intonation adjustment will cure what ails your guitar.

Does it happen with all strings, all the time? Like it isn't just the size strings you have on there is it?

I had some that were too thin, superlights, and I would have dead spots...with the thicker bluegrass ones, evertywhere is fine. I had a weird fret buzz when I had some elixur's...if you ahve a low end guitar...strings make a huge difference!

Actually Seagull is typically a better built guitar than a lot of Gibson's products and cheaper. Sounds like you simply have an intonation problem, just take it to a shop, they'll fix it for you.

I've got some of those high dollar elixers on there right now. My big E string is off some, I tune it just a little flat, and it's right on when I fret it. I also have to tune the G string a little flat to get it right on the frets, and same with the B string.

I think the strings are a set of 12's.

I'll take it back to the shop, the folks there are pretty nice folks, maybe something can be done.

Somebody suggested maybe some fret dressing.

Thanks.

Check out the above replies: intonation! If it's a new guitar maybe the place you bought it will give you a free set-up. If not, you're on your own. Most new guitars need a set-up.

I agree it may be an intonation problem, but i strongly dissagree that a seagull is built better than a gibby. Different leagues.

Well not that I'm trying to start a dispute, but Seagulls are handmade guitars built with much more atttention to detail than the mass manufactured Gibsons. Seagull uses higher quality woods and lighter finish that doesn't dampen the sound, which Gibson (while not bad) uses the sunburst finishes to cover up lower quality woods. Both are good guitars, but you get a little bit more for your buck when you go with Seagull.

Never played a Seagull...Anyway, as was stated above, you definitely have an intonation problem. Its possible to fix it by working the truss rod, saddle, and frets, but if you don't have experience, leave it to the pros. If you are pushing too hard, that may be it-but I doubt it. smile.gif

I've been here since 11/06/01 and I've never been a GTUer of the month. It's 08. I rock.

Aggred. It's intonation. Go get it set-up. Cost about $25 and a set of strings.
