Im leaning towards the mahogony. Other martin guys out there, what do u guys think? Its only 730$US, and i think ill be happy giving up those pennies.

Congratulations on your decision. I'm assuming you meant should you get the mahogany or the sapele (spruce is the top wood). I know virtually nothing about the tonal qualities of sapele so maybe someone else can illuminate us. I do know that mahogany tends to sound brighter (more treble response) than rosewood. Being a traditionalist I favor rosewood and mahogany over the alternative woods like koa and sapele.

That said, my opinion doesn't mean anything. If you have a chance to play both options and decide for yourself that would be what counts. I might ask what style of music do you intend to play on the guitar and what kind of tones do you prefer in your guitar?

Whatever you decide you'll end up with a fine guitar that should give you years and years of enjoyment.

That would be an excellent guitar. I have a D-16 myself and I love it. I have never personaly played a D-15 but I have heard nothing but good things about it. As far as the wood goes, you'll hav to get DADFAD or someone to answer that.(I wouldn't know cause mines a rosewood)

PS- $730 is a good price. wink.gif

QUOTE
All mahogany guitars became a staple in the depression era and have managed to become a standard among today's player's. Originally produced because of the economics of a more abundant wood, many players grew to prefer the evenly balanced tone. The acoustics produce that wonderful warm sweet tone that only comes from a mahogany top guitar. You will notice that airy 1930's vintage tone.
QUOTE
Genuine Mahogany
(Swietenia Macrophylla) Brazil. Mahogany was first introduced as a topwood in 1922 on the lesser expensive Style 17 guitars. Tonally, mahogany is less projective than spruce, producing a subdued response that is crisp and delicate with emphasis on the midrange.  Mahogany tops are usually available only custom instruments, but has recently become a standard top in the Baby Taylor travel guitars.

QUOTE
Sitka Spruce
(Picea Sitchensis) Canadian Northwest & Alaska. Sitka spruce is the primary topwood for Martin Guitars.  It is chosen because of it's consistent quality as well as it's straight uniform grain, longevity, and tensile strength.  Tonally, Sitka spruce is extremely vibrant providing an ideal "diaphragm" for transmission of sound on any size and style of stringed instrument.

Did they have one of those mahogony ones at the warehouse?

I would play both...then deside. I wonder if the guitar source has one...
