Depends what you want. If you want more brightness and clarity, like for a gig or recording (or even just regular playing), probably the Martins. But if you want strings that will last a long time between changes (starting off not quite as bright, but lasting much longer) then go with Elixers. Actually, I prefer D'Addario myself (Phosphor-Bronze, Bluegrass Guage). I find the Martins a bit "stiff" and not as bright as the D'Addarios. The Elixers feel better than the Martins, but are less bright. I use the D'Addarios on most of my acoustics, but Elixers on a couple where I don't play them often and hate to change strings on them when they're not used that often. And welcome to GTU.

I like D'Addario phosphor bronze the best myself for acoustic. But between those two, Martins.

I don't know, I had the same encounter with a pack of D'Addarios. I generally play Martin Mediums, but am willing to check out other brands that were recommended in this thread (Dean Markley, Elixir). But that's not going to happen until I have my remaining 3 sets of Martin Mediums used up.... wink.gif

i go for d'addario strings myself (though i play a classical so that might be a little bit different)

i've never used martins or elixirs before (assuming they are available for classicals hmmm)

once my current batch of d'addarios are finished i might try d'angelico strings. they come rather highly recommended by the shop. anyone know anything about them?

I'm with you DADFAD, phosphor bronze for me. I use John Pearse light gauge. They feel right to me, have a nice bright tone, and they seem to last fairly long. I usd to play D'Addarios but for some reason someone recommended the Pearse's and I never looked back.

Why don't you just try all of them now? There's no rule that says you have to wear out strings to change them, or no rule that says to throw strings away when you take them off.

It'll take a lot of work, but I would just get it overwith now. That's just me though, I dunno about you.

I chose elixirs, cause they sound beautiful. I've tried the martins, and noticed a difference, but I just like the elixirs myself. Haven't tried the d'addario phosphor bronze yet, but I don't even own my own steel acoustic yet. Maybe I'll intentionally break a string on my friends guitar, and tell him I'll buy him a new set, wink.gif

My sentiments exactly. I usually use Elixers(Polyweb-light) for the long haul and when I record I play Martin SP Phosphors(light).

Hey Prik!!!! Good to see the old name back! cool.gif

I've been here since 11/06/01 and I've never been a GTUer of the month. It's 08. I rock.

I used to be all hardcore about the D'Addario Phosphor Bronze EXP's, they last pretty long like Elixirs but actually sound good. But currently I'm testing GHS Phosphor Bronze and I must say, they have an oddly natural sound, y'know what I mean? Almost broken in, but not, it's hard to explain but I like them as well. But at the same time I mostly play on a nylon so I really prefer La Bella.

i've always been loyal to my martins. but, then again, i've never tried anything else. if it aint broke, don't fix it, right? but i think i'm about due for a string change. i'll give something else a go.
