Hey guys, I know this topic has been discussed way too many times, but Im in the process of buying a new acoustic and i just wanted some feedback. Ive been playing for about 7 months on my dad's old '79 epiphone, and it really just produces a dead sound now. When playing other guitars the difference in sound is incredible. Anyways, I need some recommendations on some good guitars to look into. Im on a low budget(dont really want to spend more than $250) so what are some good buys out there? I would really like to get an acoustic/electric, but is it a better buy to just get a straight up acoustic, rather than throwing out a lot of money for the electronics, and sacrificing the acoustic sound of a crappier guitar? It seems to me there isnt a whole lot of guitars around that 200 dollar range. I see a lot of beginners guitars for cheaper, but I consider myself beyond that now and I want more of an intermediate guitar. Any ideas?

First of all, when was the last time you changed strings and adjusted it? (Dad's old guitar might be better than you think.) Anyway, in that range another Epiphone isn't a bad brand to look at. My best advice, play several. Take a friend who plays. Sit in front and listen to him (guitars sound different in front than from above in the playing position.) Then play them yourself and choose the one that feels best when you play it. Keep in mind it is more of a just above entry-level price-range and guitar and you'll probably want better before too long. Anyway, good luck. And welcome to GTU.

Definitely. Might be the old epi will still sound better or at least just as good as a new 250$ guitar. Try changing strings before anything else.
