It seems to me that most of the people on this site that post atleast have taken a guitar lesson of some sort, thats all nice and dandy but I honestly couldn't afford to spend $25-$40 a lesson for who knows how long. Have you guys been taught by a family friend or what? I am amazed at how many people actually can afford to take lessons and to continue with them for a few months or more than a year. I am just asking because I would at some point in time like to take lessons but I can't seem to spend $200 or more dollars a month or what have to to get taught. So how are you guys doing it?

There are many ways to get around spending big bucks to learn guitar. This site is one of them. Take the time to look at the lessons here, go out and get a guitar book, learn your basic chords, learn your basic chords and learn your basic chords. The more you practice, the better you'll play. It takes time and some support. If you've got the the time, GTU and our forum can provide you with the support. Good luck !

hehe, thanks for the reply but I meant human to human lessons not online lessons. I have been reading online and this site has helped me tremendously. I have noticed recently that I have gotten a bit quicker, smoother and better overall in which I'm very stoked about. I think I'm gonna learn some scales and go from there. Well answer on, i'm still quite curious about what people are gonna say.

I didn't take lessons. For a long time all I had was a chord-book and records which I'd slow down to a slower speed (then tune down, etc) and try to learn. When I finally met other players, it helped a lot. Even if they're really no better than you, everyone knows something someone else doesn't. I learned mostly (besides on my own) from finding other guitarists and just trying to learn from them. Some of the newer learning tools they have nowadays (especially videos) are good learning-aids. A ten or twenty dollar video in a style you like can teach you a whole lot. But for free, there's nothing better than learning from another guitar player who'll take the time to help.

I learned guitar....almost exclusively from the internet!!! I would lg on and ask questions in these types of forums, and it was the best teacher i've ever had. Learn at my own pace, and it only costs...whatever your internet monthly costs are...which you can obviously afford.

Its worked wonders for me.....but i only ever aspire to play what i call "campfire rythm guitar"..... i just wanna keep up with friends.

good luck

Well its hard to get any teachers in the area as it is considering I live in the middle of a damn desert. The quotes I have gotten are $30 and Up on lessons for an hour. I think its rediculous but I guess someone has to make money. I have definitely learned much from this site and will continue to ask questions when I may need them. My problem is that i don't stick to one song or one thing to practice and I should start learning different scales and chord progressions instead of going through my tabs and playing the ones I feel comfortable with twice or so before I move on. I'm getting better but I think its just taking me longer than it might take someone who is a natural at it, in which is kinda frustrating for me but I am not doing this to impress anyone just wanting to do it for myself. No one in my family plays anything from what I know and playing guitar just soothes(sp?) my soul. Thanks for the help guys!

I improved drastically when I started taking lessons, I highly recommend it. For me it was only 15$ for once a week, about half an hour. My instructor is a genius in almost every musical style and he's a great guy so I think that really helps make it more pleasant and fun.

my lessons started at 70 malaysian ringgit a month and got up to 130 ringgit for a half hour lesson. that was when i reached about grade 5 level. my teacher never increased my fee even though he was supposed to heh.

but ANYWAY, thats about average price in malaysia, i'm well aware that in other parts of the world its more expensive [in new zealand it costs a big lump of money which is why i don't take lessons anymore].

whoa, i apparently started at 18.50 USD/month and got up to about 34 USD/month.

so thats how i managed it. blink.gif i'm still reeling from the cheapness of my lessons.
