That brand has a very good reputation for quality and value; I'd be a bit worried about those, due to the mostly-laminate construction, but if you're not looking for anything more than that, that's definitely a brand you can trust. However, I'd recommend buying used; you could get a more stable and reliable guitar that way.

I have an RD8. It's a low end guitar, but to be a low end guitar, it's good. An Alvarez is a very good guitar. I would highly recommend getting that one. But I wouldn't get the black one. 1) They're hard to keep clean. 2) Ugly 3) I've heard that since the black finish is thicker it can hamper the sound. But anyway decebt guitar. Go for it.

They are great guitars but how much are you willing to spend?

I am willing to spend about $200. And I was planning on buying the black one but in the sunburst finish and they are both solid spruce tops.

Your best bet is to go to your local guitar center and check them out there. You might not like the sound or the playability of it. If you are set to getting that than thats kewl too. Good luck.

Ok, thanks for everyone's help. I'll go to the guitar shop and see if they have any there.

Very true.
I just tried the black verison and the sound is as black as the guitar.
Alvarez is very good brand, but I would suggest you to check just a bit more expensive ones. There is a huge difference. At least go and try one.
After that you might want to find a second hand one.
(..well, i think i'm repeating the thing others have already said... :D )

Those guitars seem to be pretty good for the price. Alvarez has a very good reputation, I like black myself, but I also know that finish can sometimes be too dampening for the top. Whatever you get though, I'm sure you'll be getting a pretty good guitar, and it's not like you can beat that price.

personally i would get the natural brown wood colored one(the second one), but thats just because it looks more natural to me. acoustic guitars just look better to me in natural colored wood. the black doesnt appeal to me and then the color might fade like ive seen it happen with other guitars, but maybe the quality is better in a alvarez. i like alvarez guitars though, but i would prefer something else, like a gibson, taylor, or martins. they are good reliable guitars for their price though. play both before you buy and make sure it's what you really want.
