The Yamaha is pretty nice. I saw this amazing old man playing a gibson acoustic at the guitar center and he mentioned how he had been wanting to get that exact yamaha model silent guitar. I assume it is good but the only way to find out is to go to the guitar center and check it out for yourself. I know they had it at mine so you might have it at yours.

Probably not bad at all. Why do you want one of these, by the way?

I'd get a regular electroclassical instead. It may emulate the acoustic sound well, but still it's not the same as a regular resonator with a nice top.

I'd have to go with Grzegorz and ask why do you want one, it sort of defeats the purpose. I have no experience with these, but by the looks of things why don't you just get an electric guitar, a boss AC2 acoustic simulator and a set of headphones.

the main thing i am looking for is portability, i travel around the world a fair bit, and i'm getting sick of carrying a large guitar case everywhere with me

If portability is a main concern have you looked at a travel guitar? Several companies make them. I have one from Vagabond that's very nice. Martin also makes one but it's never done much for me (a triangle with strings). They're a bit like playing an over-sized mandolin. I used to take mine backpacking with me all the time. Great tone for a little package, I just have to adjust how I hold it and my right arm position. I'm unfamiliar with "silent" guitars (although a few people have probably wished my guitar was "silent" years back when I was just learning laugh.gif )
What's the idea behind them?

They don't have a body; just a bit of wood to hold up the bridge and some attachment to form the outline of a guitar. They have some kind of pickup (usually piezo) and a 1/4 inch output.

Hard to believe there's cheap anything in Japan! laugh.gif Just don't buy an orange (~$50 if the rumors are correct).
