it really depends on the kind of music you want to play and the kind of guitar you're getting. i'm presuming its an acoustic since this got posted here unsure.gif

i'd say start by learning open chords, and learning how to strum both up and down. there's nothing more annoying than seeing somebody only playing downstrokes. you might want to make your way down the fretboard and recognising notes on it a little later as well as learning tab. i wouldn't suggest going completely over to tab as that way all you'll end up with is a knowledge of reading numbers, not notes [not referring to sheet music so much as recognising the notes, and knowing what you're playing].

have fun smile.gif don't give up, practicing does help biggrin.gif and welcome to GTU.

yes, i have an acoustic guitar on its way (finally) after waiting for so long... its a washburn guitar, D100 i think...? i am into classic rock songs, and if youre familiar with yellowcard or the starting line... i like their stuff, along with nirvanas unplugged album... i like jack johnson, the beatles, pink floyd

somebody introduced me to the forum and i hadnt looked around much before posting so now i have recognized the lessons portion, but i think i should just start off by learning the definitions of some of these words, i apologize for my ignorance smile.gif but thanks for your reply, if anybody else wants to make any suggestions i would appreciate that

if you would like to figure out the definitions, just ask laugh.gif no one here is going to eat you. unsure.gif

edit: yes, i'm familiar with yellowcard and the starting line, my friend adores them. can't be much help on that score because i don't fancy them at all.

Welcome to Gtu

I would suggest buyying a tuner... It can be a hard concept to learn alone...
so buy a tuner! then find a fact sheet on guitar... the parts of the guitar terms and thier meaning etc... I taught myself in such a manner Also i could pwersonally reccommend Guitar for DUMMIES that is where i got my solo start..

good luck. ask lots of questions and play every day!!!!! tongue.gif

When your fingers get sore
As they surely will
And the road ahead seems all uphill
When the chord can't be reached
And the note won't ring
When the strings go 'kadummph"
When you want them to sing....

Take heart and know you're not alone
We're all on that road still
So ask us your question, we'll give it look
We won't know the answer but Dadfad will!!

.....I obviously have too much time on my hands!

Nirvana is fairly simple so if you keep practicing you'll learn them in no time.
