I am looking for some fairly easy acoustic slide songs to learn. I like playing in the DADF#AD tuning.

Not too tough. One in DADF#AD and another in DGDGBD (Open-G).

CODE
Dark Was The Night Cold Was The Ground
by Blind Willie Johnson

In Open-D (DADF#AD) or Open-E (EBEBG#BE) Tuning.

Below is a version of Blind Willie's tune that combines parts of his
original version with parts of the Ry Cooder and Sam Mitchell covers.
There are also a few little touches of my own thrown into it as well.
The main themes and tags are consistant with those of Johnson. These
lines can be blended or repeated in other octaves as however sounds
most pleasing. On his original 1927 version, Willie would softly
moan in unison with some of the lines, giving the tune an almost eth-
erial blueness to it, the essence of pure blues. This tune was among
those carried on board the Explorer probe launched into space to carry
a representation of our earth to others who may share our universe
and someday find it.

In the tab the slashes / and \ are used to generally show the direction
of slide, but it's difficult to explain the flowing motion used in a
truly accurate way. A few notes are shown to sort of show where two dis-
tinct notes are made from a single pick and slide motion and how. The
letter h is used below to show 12th fret touch-harmonics. In the single
place a hammer-on is used, I used the word hammer to show it (0hammer2).

So use this as a guide to get started. Just something to show where some
of the notes and phrases are located, then play it as you feel it. This
is truly a great tune. Eric Clapton was quoted as saying hearing this
tune for the first time changed his concept of the guitar for the rest
of his life. Anyway, here it is. I hope it helps.........

YOU GOT TO MOVE by Mississippi Fred McDowell, as taught circa 1969, Como, MS
Tabbed by Dadfad (John M)  duolian@msn.com  (Dadfad@dadfad.com)  9/19/02
Using: Microsoft Notepad, Courier New Regular 10 Font (printing information)

This tune is shown in Open-G tuning (DGDGBD). It can also be done using an
Open-A (EAEAC#E). In my opinion Open-G is preferable because there is less
tension on your guitar neck and less chance of string breakage. The tab is
identical for either tuning. This tune should be done finger-style, using
The thumb and one or more fingers. The 5-string bass-note can be droned with
the treble slide work when or if you feel it's appropriate. This is a very
basic slide tune, done in a very improvisational style. Fred never played it
exactly the same way twice.

That's a progression for one verse. The same progression, with a few improv
changes if desired, can be used for all verses and a guitar break, should
you want one. Here's another progression which can be used for another verse
to add a little change to the texture of the tune. This progression will rely
a bit more on chording and less on slide than the previous one.

The above uses more chording for the I, IV and V position changes. These chord
structures are generalities. They can be changed or substituted to preference,
or mixed with parts from the very first upper slide progression. Let me stress
how improvisational this style is. Use this tab as a starting point, then do
it your way. The way you feel it. The Rolling Stones did, as have lots of other
people, myself included. Good luck. Any questions please feel to e-mail me.

Thanks DADFAD,
I was just about to post a request for songs in DADF#AD so your post was timely.

As well as slide does any one know finger picking songs in that tuning?

I am trying to built up a set of songs in that tuning for a gig and at the moment I only have one. If I can conquer Blind Willie Johnsons tune that will be 2. Its a pain to re-tune after just one song during a gig, but I don't know any others.

Any suggestions.

Just found this slide tune in DADF#AD, might be worth a try.

From : Jean-Pierre Trolet

PARIS TEXAS - by RY COODER
( from the soundtrack of the film of the same name by Wim Wenders)

I tabbed and recorded a MP3 demo (downloadable from the webpage here above) with
two acoustic slide guitars but if you alternate the two tab lines you can even play
the whole with only one guitar.
The two of them are tuned in OPEN D : from low to high : D - A - D - F# - A - D

Legend :
/ : slide up
\ : slide down
: slide rapidly to and fro around the fret

All the notes of the second guitar are played with the slide bar, so are the ones
played with the first except where indicated.
Where the slide bar is used , play just above the numbered fret.

Yes, I have a few. Here's one that I did not long ago. It's an arrangement of the tune "Prodigal Son" in open-D. It was done by the Stones (covering an old tune called "No Way To Get Along" by an old 1920s bluesman named Rev. Robert Wilkins). I actually preferred the Stones' cover (which is pretty unusual for me). My arrangement is much more like the Stones than Wilkins (not trying to have a swelled head here but it's better than the Stones version! laugh.gif ) It's not all that hard to play either. I'm also presently working on a fingerstyle tune done by Blind Blake named "Police Dog Blues" (one of his most impressive). Blake did it in open-E, but I'm convinced he used open-D capoed on the second fret for his recording. As open-E and open-D tab and finger identically, it could be played in either of course. It should be finished in a week or two. To be honest, that one might be kind of a bear depending on where you're at fingerstyle-wise. It took me a while to master it (master? sad.gif ) when I first learned it from John Jackson maybe fifteen or twenty years ago. Anyway, here's "Prodigal Son"...............
CODE
PRODIGAL SON (No Way To Get Along)
by Rev. Robert Wilkins
(also covered by John Fahey,
the Rolling Stones and Rory Block)
 -arr. by JM

Just a poor boy, took all he had and started down the road.

Started down the road

Took all he had and started down the road.

Where he was bound the Lord God only knowed.

He guessed he'd find some way to get along.

Was a mean old world...., treated him so cold.

Treated him so cold

A mean old world, it treated him so cold.

It was not easy, just as he'd been told.

He could not find a way to get along.

Then the poor boy hung his head, hung his head and cried.

Hung his head and cried

Poor boy stood and hung his head and cried.

No longer did he listen to his pride.

"I cannot find a way to get along."

Said "Believe I'll ride.... Believe I'll go back home.

Believe I'll go back home

Believe I'll ride, believe I'll go back home.

I cannot live in this old world alone.

I do not yet know how to get along."

And the father said "See my son coming down the road.

Coming down the road.

See my son a'coming down the road.

Prepare a feast and call the family 'round.

He once was lost, but now he is found."

Now that is how we all should get along.

Here are the licks and variations that can be used during the I Position
on the one and/or two strings during the line "Poor boy took all he had
an' started down the road. Started down the road..." areas of the tune
and other places as well (I think the Stones just used the 1 string on
the third fret and open), and for the other verses in that same area:

F#|------------------------------------------------------------0--
.D|------------------------------3--------------------------------
.A|---------------------------------2-----------------------------
.D|------------------------------------0------0>>>>>>>>-----------
                                      ^      ^
                            (string snap)  (Swooosh....)

                            THE END!!!!!!!!!!

When playing this tune, keep it loose and add or change as you feel like
it, whether with the little D-lick variations above or whatever. The
Gadd9's can be hammered into (as shown) or hammering both notes, or not
at all, as a change of pace in different verses (or even within the same
verse. Whatever....this is just a loose guide. I've stolen phrases,
words, rhythms from all the versions I've heard into this one. It sure
isn't chiselled in stone! (in sand maybe! LOL...)

Un-plugged is not the same as
never-was-plugged-in-to-begin-with.

Thanks again dadfad, I hope your troubles with "Police dog blues" works out.

Anyone wanting a better copy of the Paris Texas tab can find it on GTU.

I must work out how to post code one day. dry.gif

Hey Ibanez6, is that Tommy Emmanuel in your signiture??? I went to a concert of his about two months ago in Logan, Utah and he was amazing. Probably the fastest fingerstyle player I've ever seen.

Yes siree,

I my view, he is the worlds best Acoustic Guitarist going around at the moment.
(But thats another topic for the forum, and been done before). His only down side is that he thinks his the worlds best too, (loves himself a bit much). Did that come across at the concert or was he just plain awesome? His latest CD just blows me away everytime I hear it.

By the way dadfad. That prodical son tab is great, been playing it all weekend, the great thing about the format of the song is that you can go into guitar breaks using figures or slide and link the whole thing together with the walking double stop pinches. It's a good one for practising solo breaks whilst keeping the beat going.

Thanks again man, loving your work.

Thanks. It is a good tune to improv little licks and variations over. Yeah, once in a while I'll add a little bit of slide to it as well (Rev. Robert Wilkins did the original version as a slide-tune). If you're into slide as well as fingerpicking, I'll tell you something that might come in handy. On a tune that is basically a true slide-tune I'll use a regular slide of course, but on some tunes where it's basically a fingerstyle (or any non-slide tune) and you just might want to add a few slid notes here or there (or even just the last note of the tune even). A very short little slide I wear on my pinkie that's actually little more than a very wide pinky-ring. Not long enough to interfere with any fingerstyle work I might need my pinky for and just long enough to slide a note here or there especially on the first or second string.
Un-plugged is not the same as
never-was-plugged-in-to-begin-with.
