hi all and merry friggin christmas!!!!
My query:
I have 4 acoustic guitars, and ive been playing for 2 years on and off. I know my chords, and starting to get some scales down. My kick azz girlfriend just bought me a strat for christmas ( squire combo) its not a high end guitar, but its much more than perfect for me and what i want to do with it.
But now when i goof around on it, all i find myself doing, is playing it just like i play my acoustics. I am not schooled in guitar theory, or have never taken lessons.
i dont want to do any "slash" type playing... but maybe some john scolfield type jazz someday.
any tips or nice starter songs?
ive been very influenced by the stones, david bowie, ben harper, dave matthews band, jack johnson, mason jennings, the list goes on and on
maybe im just asking for some bands or songs that will introduce me and open my ears to a new sound on my electric. im more of a classic rock guy than junk like guns and roses, and creed, and nickelback crap.
suggest away:)
thanks

you have an awesome girl if she bought you a guitar. take care of her.
as for music...i would suggest some hendrix. he has a lot of good songs. and most aren't too hard.
aerosmith has some nice songs too, look into them.
i'm not sure if you'd like nirvana, but look into them. kurt always had something different. easy songs. believe me, you do learn a lot from playing them. there was a unique sound to each song.
nowdays, you can hardly find a good band. look around and listen. find someone you like.
try to get some underground bands. there are a lot of very good ones out there.
have fun with your guitar.

whether you think some music is junk is a personal opinion.
it all depends on what you like. and just because he doesn't like a band you do, doesn't make it right to say he is a disgrace.
junk is a loosely used term as is.
there has always been a war as to what music people like, and what they don't like. some say different bands are good, some are not. its something that cannot be won. if you like what you listen to, fine, who cares what anyone says.
slash has talent, and in a way, so did kurt. maybe not the technical talent slash has, but he did have talent. just not the kind you think of.

exactly...i was about to say...I dont think he meant it as in actual junk (maybe he did...but i didnt take it that way)
I took it as..."bands like..." or "something like"
"i got some junk in my basement" or "yeah he's got like four cars or some junk"

yes... i wasnt sure some of you were so linear in your reading...or thinking.
I respect those "junk bands" i referred to...i just dont like them, and they do not have a spot reserved in my stereo.
You all on the other hand may hate my choices of music...call it junk... if you will..
but yes... it was slang. and somehow we have travelled way off topic!
