Well, that was colourful.

Fenders are nice guitars, but not for everyone. Don't just limit yourself automatically to Fenders. Try others too. The only thing is that you probably won't get a Fender for 200-300$, unless it's a used MIM (Made in Mexico) Stratocaster or Telecaster. You might want to try and look at some of Squier's guitars, they are a company that makes decent knockoffs of Fender guitars. As for telling if something is a Fender, look at the headstock. It will say it right on there.

Alverez is my favorite acoustic brand in that price range. Try out a few of them and see what you think.

I agree with Melborne, Alvarez is a great guitar in that price range.

Hiya. Listen mate, you don't have a list of guitars and then just pick one you think might be OK. You have to pick it up, hold it, caress it,play it, hear it's tone, let it speak to you. Don't think "Oh I must buy this one 'cos it's a *whatever make of guitar* and not that one."
Your guitar should be almost like a part of you. It was made from a living tree, every guitar is different, each one has it's own life. Hold it, feel the neck especially as some are wide and some are narrow. You have to find one that suits your hands and fingers.
If you really want some good advice I would say to you find a good music shop. You should be able to sense whether it's a good shop or not the minute you walk in. A good shop will not be interested in only taking your money, they will want to help you find the best guitar you can afford so that you'll keep going back there in years to come. I am lucky to know a shop which did just that. Trust me on this, go to a good music shop first, forget about your list for now.

Jay.

Yup, but I assume he meant an acoustic guitar.

And when talking about acoustic, I'd consider these Alvarez models, some low end Takamine, or Seagull rather than Fender.

the best advice i could give you is: dont buy one online.

i tried it.

i sold it two weeks later.

then i actually went to a store, and HELD the guitar in my hands.

it had twice the voice for half the price

ive had it for two years.

who cares what kind it is??

for a beginner-id say dont spend more than 300 on your first guitar.

but make sure to feel it first...if you pick it up and automatically, you feel like you could bust out Zappa's Cosmic Debris (or whatever) then you know what to do.

good luck with your search!

One thing worth considering when buying your first acoustic is the action.

If it's too high, it can really put someone off. My first acoustic was like that & it does hamper progression.

On the other hand, learning like that can really strengthen those fingers & build up the calouses.

(Does my post have a point? wacko.gif Don't know, but I am trying.)

And no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop at late or early hour
Now is the only time you own
Live, love, toil with a will
Place no faith in time
For the clock may soon be still

Thats definitely true. My Taylor has high action but it has actually helped my playing as it has strengthened my index for barres and has built some callouses(sp?) on my fingers.

In the $200-$300 range I would go to the nearest guitar center or music shop and play all the acoustics in that price range. Some brands to look out for are Takamine, Dean, Alvarez, Washburn, Yamaha, and Ibanez. There are a couple more but the best thing to do is play them all and pick from what you like. My first guitar was a Takamine G230 that I loved but I was dumb and traded it in. mad.gif

Hmm, I've stayed with ultra lights/lights and I do get some buzzing if I bang it quite hard but nothing too bad. Ahh darn, I just realized the last unopened pack of Elixirs are medium gauge. I hope it isn't going to be much harder to play.
