You don't; a capo is a mechanical device. Some examples.

hmm.... i wonder if i could make one of those
i'm sure you can with rubberbands and a penci. But you probably should just shell out the 10 bucks for a real capo...it's much easier on you and your guitar.

its something you clamp down over certain frets, in this case the 8th, to raise the pitch of the guitar.
i've stayed away from them. i just use my finger. but thats me.
you can get one for like $10 at a music store.

if you barre a whole fret with your finger then how are you supposed to make chords
say you barre the 2nd fret how are you gonna pull off playing a c#m

you can't do that...you can use your finger to an extent. i'm having someone teach me a little more on how to do that. cause i don't like playing with capos.

hmm im not understanding this capo.. if you capo lets say the 4 fret how would you get and sound from a G chord? would it be muted out?
ha dude if you put the capo on the 4th
then your g would be
e 7
b 4
g 4
d 4
a 6
E 7
play the chords as if the 4th fret were open

I think I understand what you're asking about the "G" chord. Anything you play below the capo would obviously be muted. When you capo somewhere you treat the capo like the nut. So, say if you capo up on the second fret (really between the first and second fret) you can then play a "G" shape chord, which would now have its root note on the fifth fret making it an "A" chord.
With a capo you can keep the same fingerings, but change the chords and, thus, the key of a song. This is helpful to create a different sound and feel to a song, as well as allowing you to play in a key that is more suited to your voice.
I would avoid "making your own" capo to avoid possibly damaging your guitar. Fork out the $10 and buy one. Try it and see if you like it. I use one pretty regularly. It's not "cheating", it merely expands possibilities on your guitar.

i did the pencil and rubberband thing, could be because my old guitar was really crap, but it left lines at the neck where the rubberband went round it.
all in all, go invest in a nice good capo, a kyser or a shubb are good choices. and get one that suits your guitar [electric guitar capos and classical guitar capos are different].
anyway, even though this has been explained before, basically what the capo does is clamp on a certain fret. think about it, if you were to clamp down on the fourth fret, every note played above it will be higher. so yeah, it transposes.

Why would someone not like using a capo?? seems pointless to me
They're there for a reason, you'd need some set of fingers to replace one
Ca (As in cat) po btw, lol

And now I'm lying here I've had too much booze
I've been shat on and spat on and raped and abused
I know that I am dying and I wish I could beg
For some money to take me from the old main drag
