I was at the local hardware store a while back looking for something....maybe a little c clip for the rear sight to my black powder rifle....ain't sure, doesn't make any difference anyway, and I saw some large brass bearings. That's what they had em labled as, but I would call em bushings. I picked one up and slid it on my pinkey, pretty good fit, and it looked like it would cover all six strings.
I didn't buy one at the time, but finally went back to the store and got one today, they are just $3.49 plus tax, and would no doubt be twice that at the music store.
It's a sweet sounding slide.

Sounds like a good one, Okie. Most of my slides come from the hardware store (or the liquor store! ha!). Brass, copper and steel pipes, fittings, whatever cut/turned/sawed etc into a slide. Nowdays with hardware store items made so crappy, they don't use nice heavy brass and copper like they used to. Mostly thin sh!t (or plastic!). Copper makes a good one too (although brass is my favorite). You can take a piece of copper pipe (it used to come in nice thick grades but not anymore) and cut off two pieces. Take the second piece and (not for the feint of heart) drive it into the second piece thereby making it twice as thick. It sounds like you lucked out on finding a nice useable slide (...er... brass bearing!
)
Oh, and by the way, Oke. They've started making these new-fangled rifles where all ya do is drop in a ready-made cartridge and your set to go. You might wanna look into one of them! Hahahaha!

I got me one of them several years back, and keeping with the old fart tradition it's an 06...it's a killin machine, will knock a gnat off a fly's ass at 200 yds with one of my roll your own loads.
The black powder is just for grins, I don't hunt with it anymore, just get it out and do targets now and then.
They have modern versions of those things too, pyradex tablets and sabot pistol bullets...it ain't right, they should be outlawed...iffn a fella is gonna shoot black powder, that's what he otta shoot, and a round patched ball for the projectile.
Ya gotta wait for the smoke to clear so ya can see if ya hit what you're shootin' at.

Actually, I figured you probably did (wouldn't have much jerky otherwise!). I was just being a smart-ass. Yeah, I know what you mean, Okie. Kind of defeats the purpose of using a black-powder gun in the first place.

I knew you was just funnin'. I used to get me a deer with the smoke pole now and then, but it's just got to where I can't trust it out past 75 yds or so, and I do hate to put a bad lick on anything and cause undue suffering, sound like a wimp there don't I ?
Jerky, man would I like some jerky. You know I was laid up this season and couldn't get out amoungst em, but I did load some bullets for my son-in-law, my nephew, and my brother. I also sent the 44 mag, and the 06 killin' machine with them to western Oklahoma where we do most of our damage, and those boys did bring home the bacon..so to speak.
You think I've seen any venison? Hell no, not even a stick of jerky, that's what I call gratitude.
I do have a buddy in Texas that killed a pickup load of deer this year, and he's gonna bring me a couple of shoulders when he gets up this way. I'll bone those out and make my own damn jerky, and those boys ain't gonna get even a taste.
I might send some your way, you've been alot of help and inspiration here, and you're almost framus.

One of my favourite slides is a sawn-off piece of piping...... unfortunately it turns my finger green when my hands get really sweaty.

Welcome to GTU, Timber Wolf.
Yes, there are lots of things one can use. I know a guy who uses the brass shell casing from a big-bore rifle (a fifty caliber I think).
