Hi, I'm a beginner on acoustic guitar, and would like to ask what would be a good guitar for me to purchase. As a beginner, I don't want to spend a forture for a Martin or Taylor, but want to get the best 'bang for my buck'. I am practicing on a POS, from China or somewhere, and a guitarist friend said a good guitar, with a nice action, would make a world of difference in my progress. So I'd love to hear what others would recommend for a beginner on a limited budget. biggrin.gif

Thanks!!

washburn makes a decent acoustic for relitively cheap. i've seen some starting at about $100 or so.

yamaha makes some for around $150-200.

true, these aren't the best guitars, but when you're just starting, you'll learn on them.

i went from a bad guitar to a wal-mart one.

and honestly, the wal mart one isn't bad at all, contrary to what everyone told me it'd be like.

also, try looking in your local paper in the free classifieds. a friend of mine found a nice fender acoustic there really cheap. and someone i knew got an almost new martin for barely anything. the guy selling it had no idea what he had. so look around there for something, never know when you'll stumble across something awesome.

you really need to get out there and try different kinds. it doesn't matter what the name is as long as it feels good and you like the way it sounds.

Hi there.

I'm also a beginner. I started playing guitar 4 months ago, and bought an acoustic one 2 months ago (gonna buy a 12-string this week... yeeeah. I'm pretty optimistic, huh ?) I've got a Morgan WG-01 & I love it. Very easy to play on in my opinion, and both my brothers who've played for 15 and 20 years have tried it & thought it was a good guitar. And it didn't cost a sh*tload of money. I don't know the prices over there, but I paid ca. $ 230-250 for it here in Norway. Money well spent. I have no idea if Morgan is considered good guitars or not, but I really like it.

Thanks Elin.....I have never heard of a Morgan, but I'll sure check it out. Anything would be better than what I have now. I love the sound of a 12 string...I hope to progress to it sometime myself......Thanks for your reply.

First off, welcome to GTU.

What kind of budget do you have? Depending on how much you are willing to spend you can find a variety of qualities and styles of guitar. However, as you're a beginner I'd say there isn't too much point in getting a guitar that costs a lot for obvious reasons.

A good idea is to go to a local guitar shop with someone you know who plays guitar so they can help to give you advice. The people in the shop just want to sell you a guitar, they don't care much how good the guitar is or how suitable it is for you. If you bring a friend along they'll be able to tell you if a guitar is worth the money or if you should look elsewhere.

I would recommend going to your local music store and buy what feels comfortable to you. Everyone has likes and dislikes and you would know better than anyone what feels right. My first beginner acoustic was a Takamine G-230; What a great beginner acoustic for $199. I'm kinda biased when i comes to acoustics but try all acoustics in your price range. Check out Seagulls, Yamaha, Dean, Alvarez, Washburn, Takamine, and Ibanez.

when you go look at guitars make sure to check for minor or major defaults in the manufacturing, such as a warped or twisted neck. make sure it has a truss rod (some don't), check the tuning gear to see if it's in good working condition, and check for chips or cracks in the body and neck of the guitar. when i got my first guitar i had my neighbor who's been playing guitar for over 35 yrs go with me. so it's always good to have some help from someone you can trust.
