This summer or maybe next year, I'm thinking of going on a few guitar weekends, preferably country blues based.
I'm not great when it comes to meeting people, and always get the impression in my mind that with these things, there can be a bit of a clique, or you get left behind if you can't keep up or whatever. I'd hate to go to one, and end up feeling uncomfortable, or intimidated.
They do them in some lovely settings and hotels though, if you pick the right ones.
Has anyone here been on any at all? Good experience's, or bad.

You need to go to the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield Kansas. It holds the International Flatpick Championship. It is held during the third weekend of September. They have a website it is wvfest.com. Some of the greatest acoustic players in the world attend every year.

I've been to a few and instructed at a few. I highly recommend them. (I have an old friend who now lives in the UK, near Cheltenham, who is the co-ordinator of one over there.) But the best ones are probably in the US.
Un-plugged is not the same as
never-was-plugged-in-to-begin-with.

How can we find info on these events?

I know about quite a few (I'll probably be attending one myself this summer in West Virginia.) I have a friend who is the co-ordinator of one early this fall in Telluride, Colorado. There are also pretty good ones in North Carolina and the Puget Sound (Washington) area. And others. Jorma Kaukonan offers week-end ones at his "Blues Camp" at his Furpiece Ranch in Ohio (which personally I think is ridiculously over-priced. Twice the price for a week-end (or "long-weekend" sometimes) of the same instruction (or better) for a week in other places) So does Woody Mann (in NYC, at a TOTALLY ridiculous price!). Contrary to being clique-ish, the ones I have been involved with had a very friendly atmosphere. I've met people at them who have become close friends. (Of course I can't vouch for them all, but generally I have found this to be the case. Acoustic guitarists, especially acoustic trad-styles guitarists, are generally a pretty friendly bunch!) Anybody want any information on any of these (or the one my friend does in the UK) I'd be happy to supply it.

Never been on one myself but a mate of a mate is currently staying a week at Pierre Bensusan's chalet on an extremely expensive mentoring thingywhatsit.
This guy Eddie is a fantastically good guitarist (he was a session musician for the Beach Boys and a host of other famous bands) but this can only help him sharpen his skills and improve.
Lucky bugger.
