I didn't know Gibson made acoustics. Are they a decent guitar? Someone at school has one he said is just laying around. If they are decent, I may see if he'd want to sell it for a bit.

E-bay...has anyone bought a guitar from there? I've seen a ton of lefty acoustics really cheap.

I'm starting to get desperate for an acoustic. Mine has a few months to live according to a guitar teacher. The bridge is coming up fast. Everyday, it's coming up marginally, but still coming up. So I need some acoustic, quick. I've been asking around school and looking for anything cheap that I can afford. I can't imagine a day without playing an acoustic. Electric just isn't the same.

I have a 1937 sunburst Gibson acoustic. The strings really need to be changed though.

ask dadfad about the gibsons, and as far as ebay goes, i bought my classical off of it. just do your research and ask the seller an ass ton of questions. good luck, and sorry to hear about the walmart, but then again, that's why it's a walmart.

Yeah, I'm going to get my wal-mart one fixed. It sounds decent, just that bridge. I'm taking it to be fixed soon, but I still want something better to play. I've used my Wal-Mart one at a few gigs, and it went over ok.

About E-bay, I've seen a lot of guitars I've liked, and I'm thinking of getting one. Just another bridge guitar, one to get me to the next. One that will last more than 2 months.

I'm just going to bolt the bridge down. Then it won't come up for a long time.

I've never had a good acoustic, so honestly, I don't care what I have, it will be fine with me as long as it is in good shape.

The guitars I am lookin to buy are coming from the UK.

Yeah, I've figured that in, but even with that, it'll be around $100, little more, little less.

I bought my Takamine off eBay. But it was only 20km away from me.

Evileye bought his Gibson Acoustic from eBay and imported it from the USA. He said it was fine.

Gibson acoustics have been around much longer than their electrics have... Might have been around before electricity was available to the masses, but I am not sure of that.

I bought an amp off of Ebay and it worked out great for me. I would be a little weary of getting an acoustic guitar off of someone on ebay, but that is just me.

Gibson (i/m/o) makes/made the finest acoustic guitars ever built. I have quite a few different Gibson acoustics, my number-one acoustic guitar being a 1934 "The Jumbo" (no number, like J-45, etc because it was the first jumbo-sized guitar ever built by a guitar manufacturer so they just named it "The Jumbo"), sometimes called "The Holy Grail of Flat-Top Guitars". Almost all Gibson acoustics (assuming they aren't damaged, etc) are good guitars. The best are the earliest (as compared to almost all guitars made nowadays). The period from mid-69 through the early '80s aren't quite as good because Gibson was bought by another non-guitar making company who had the bright idea that making the wood thicker would cut down on warranty repairs (duh, use 2x4's I guess...). They sound and play okay, but don't have the projection and power of earlier (and later) Gibsons, then the company was sold again to a wealthy Wall Street guitar-enthusiast (who still owns it) and the quality picked up a great deal (but not quite to pre-war/pre-1969 standards).

I've bought a couple of guitars off of E-bay and have been lucky. They were as stated. I specified they be shipped C.O.D so I could insist on inspecting them for "shipment damage" before paying the delivery guy for them. It cost a couple of bucks more but I considered it almost like insurance. This is harder to do now that many e-bay sales places want to use Pay-Pal instead of pre-pay or COD.

what make are they? ive never heard of a cheap acoustic from the uk, only hand made stuff. it might be cheaper to source it from somewhere else.

The only actual made in Britain factory made guitars i know of are Fylde and they are not cheap. The rest are as you said hand made.Id be interested to know of any other British factorys to.Most cheap guitars are knocked up in places like china on the err cheap.

You get what you pay for...just be forewarned. You are seeing that somewhat right now with you Walmart guitar and it's bridge coming apart after only a month or two.

Yeah, but out of all my acoustics, I've never paid over $100 for one. I've had 3. My first was free, my second was a pawn shop one, and now I have the Wal-Mart one. I have a job, so I'll have a nice guitar soon I hope.

My friend I'm staying with bought a few guitars from e-bay. One was black one, brand new, for $99, another was a blue one for $50, and she picked up a really nice Takamine for $150. All acoustic ones. The 2 acoustics she bought for less than $100, were brand new, and both play really well. The Takamine was the best though, and I really liked it.

I've narrowed my search in guitars to either a Takamine or an Alvarez.

I bought my 12 string ($79.00) and an Oscar Schmidt 6 string ($30.00) from E-bay and they were both fine guitars. In fact I feel like I stole them! It is a gamble though so be prepared to get what you get. Ask the seller lots of questions if you go this route. Not sure about lefty guits but you can always reverse the strings!

Good luck Billy!

I'm going to talk to my friend Lucy about who she bought her guitars from, because all of them were from the same person, and all were in very good shape.

I was looking at a 12 string, but it'll be a pain to find a lefty one, I don't want to go through the nightmare of restringing one.

Aye, no problems whatsoever - but I did a bit of research, the guy I bought it from sold only top-end acoustics and electrics.

I'd stay away from a twelve string if you're just looking for a first time guitar, wouldn't be particulerly practical.

Two VERY fine choices smile.gif I have an older (30+ yrs) Alvarez that sounds like pure butter and plan on getting a Takamine when I have the money to shell out for one of their higher end models.

Good luck on your purchases. Don't settle for ######ty just because you're new to buying acoustics. Find a guitar you love and never let it out of your sight...sounds like a cheesy romance line, doesn't it?

I really want a Taylor, but obviously I can't affort something like that for a long time. I've seen a Takamine which played almost like a Taylor I've tried, so I'm leaning more towards that.

I got off my ass and got a job, so hopefully by the end of the summer I'll have one.

I've had a few acoustics, but no nice ones. One no name one, and the Wal-Mart one, which really isn't bad.
