My guitar teacher is telling me to saturate myself with fingerstyle guitarists both music and presence since that is what I am now studying. I already listen to quite a bit. Micheal Hedges, Leo Kottke, Don Ross, Phil Keaggy, Kaki King, and that is all I can think of. Can you all reccomend some other good fingerstyle guitarists I can check out? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure SRV has a few songs done fingerstyle.

It's good to be able to do fingerstyle. I can't, but I would love to. The only thing I can do with my fingers is f...........

Yeah...

SRV is the only one that comes to mind.

How about Esteban?

Don't fool yourself, she was heartache from the moment that you met her.

Tommy Emmanuel, Martin Simpson.
What does their family tree look like? A stump!?

Tommy Emmanuel
Pierre Bensusan
Doyle Dykes
Chet Atkins

and a bunch of other people whose music I play and love yet have not shown proper respect in remembering their names.

Some old time guys:

Merle Travis
Blind Blake
Mississipi John Hurt
Rev. G. Davis

Some new that haven't been mentioned yet:
Peter Finger
Justin King

Edit: And if you by any chance find something by Jacek Spruch, get it. He's the best living Polish fingerstyle player, but I seriously doubt you can find his records anywhere abroad. He is a traditional player, and plays rags, but Travis, Atkins, Davies, Piedmont guitarists... and his own rags that are in no way inferior to all those great names.

But he's a local phenomenon, no chance to gain more popularity.

At this point I would recommend you concentrate on artists who tend to play fingerstyle more in standard tuning in a straight-forward style (most of the guys you mentioned rely a lot on altered tunings and/or unusual techniques). Goldrush's choice of John Renbourn is a good one (Duck plays in almost every acoustic style, including many altered tunings. I atttended a couple of workshops by Duck about twenty years ago and the variety of his rep is pretty amazing.). Most of those mentioned by Grzeg fall into that category. Don't make it overly complex at this point. Concentrate on pure picking skills and leave the variations for later.

Hm, you've covered most of the "crazy fingerstyle" genre with what you allready listen to, but for some real crazyness try some Keller Williams. Also, John Fahey is another... Peter Lang...

Ah, but let's not forget that we need to inspire the lad!

Go download Son of a Gun by Tommy Emmanuel and find the sheetmusic at the same time.

If you can still pick up a guitar after hearing it, then you'll progress just fine.

It's a song. Give me your email and I'll send you a link for yousendit.com

In the meantime here is a quick sound bite of me playing two Tommy Emmanuel tracks. These are not to my best standard, the recording sounds terrible.. *shame*

For a good selection of finger style players (and other finger style music and info) go here.

www.acousticfingerstyle.com

And check out the guitar links area.

My current favourite is Tommy Emmanual but others have already listed Tommy, Chet, Leo Kotke etc. All good stuff.
