I've got some neices that are some kind of little cuties. One of the young ones (14 yesterday) was given an old beat up Cort electric a while back, and she thinks she wants to be a guitar player.

I'm suppose to teach her what I can to get her started, but first thing was to get the guitar in playable condition. It was missing a couple of those blocks at the bridge where ya adjust intonation, whammy bar was missing, no big deal there, a couple of machine heads were gone, the 5 way switch was broke and only played in one position, don't know about the pickups because of the switch problem, the back plate was missing, we could live without that, and it needed a new set a wires.

I was looking at around $40 worth of parts and my time to work on it, and for some strange reason I just traded it with a $50 bill on one of those cheap little squires. It sure isn't much, but it's a start for the little gal...she sure was happy when I gave it to her for her birthday along with a little Dean Markey practice amp.

When I was on my way back to the house I asked myself, "Why didn't you trade that piece a crap in on an acoustic?"

We all have our moments.

You'll probably get a lot of " Squiers suck ", but honestly, with some upgrades they can be just as good as an MIM Strat. True acoustic is best to learn on, but electrics can be more fun, so maybe she'll play it more since she can do more with it.

As she gets older, maybe she'll acquire a taste for acoustic music. Then buy her an acoustic.

If she's happy you did the right thing, Okie. (Just keep on reminding her as you show her a few things on it about "the finer things in Life") (like acoustic guitars! laugh.gif )

And there comes a time in life when "projects" are looked at more like "a pain-in-the-ass" than a "challenge". I think me and you both have reached that time of life, Oke! You did the right thing.

Well I did get a big ole hug last night when I was leavin.

I got word today that her folks sent her and that guitar to the garage last night, and then had to make a couple of trips to get herto turn that damn thing down.....yep, I think I did some good.

That squire is pretty cheesy, but I told the young lady that if she gets serious and works hard at learning that we could trade it in on a better one.

Maybe an acoustic will be in order about then.

You can make a Squier sound good. Put 3 hot rails on it. That will raise the dead at a loud volume. I'm not kidding.

If you get her an acoustic, I recommend either an Alvarez or Taylor. I've found those to be great guitars.

As rock'n'roll has been called "the anthem of youth", those words have been the anthem of parents since the late fifties!

Well, now your neice loves ya, but her parents hate ya. Win some, lose some! laugh.gif

That's a very good idea. Something interesting could come out of this.

If she's just starting, it was a good purchase.

C'mon, Okie, it's just an electric. Attach good pickups to a shed door, and it'll play. smile.gif

For the hell of doing so, I put 3 hot rails on a guitar once. Some thing I picked up in a pawn shop for $40.

It gets so loud, you won't need to use near the volume you had to. And I had someone wire them so all 3 would play at once. Nice and loud, and it sounded great.

I sold it to someone for $150. Not a bad profit.
