You could try Horse with no name by America, or House of the rising sun by The Animals if your just starting out or just find some tabs by any of these guys:
Bob Marley, Green Day, Oasis, Offspring, Bob Dylan, White Stripes.

We really should have a sticky thread for beginner songs or something.

Yeah, I stole it.

Geez.

Yes, learn the open chord forms first, I guess. That would help you learn songs. It won't however, help you learn to play guitar.

Get signed up for lessons. What is so wrong with that?

You need to find a friend or relative who plays the guitar and say: hey "uncle Stan" can you come over and show me some basic things on the guitar to get me started? most people would be happy to help someone who is eager to learn and doesen't get cocky with them...

Yeh, anyone who really wants to learn, will learn providing they're prepared to put in the practise...

I'm self-teaching and I've been playing for only a few months, and I've picked up a lot of the chord shapes and such from wanting to learn songs, and when I find a chord I don't know, I look it up.

I think I was a little stupid cos I started out playing stuff like Classical Gas.

But, yeah, If you really want to learn, just put in the hours and you will. (of course, I say 'hours' figuratively speaking, for you can never stop learning when it comes to music).

Different people have different natural abilities, so some people will find it easier than others. But, given time and patience, anyone can learn at least the basics.

I wanted to do the step by step "basic" guitar chord "cheats" that myself and maybe many others might have started out with...at least I did way back when Moby Dick was a minnow...anyway they are the cheat tabs for the basic chords
A - B - C - D - E - F - G...I wanted to copy and paste the tabs here and tell ya where your fingers would go...but although I might be just OK as a acoustic guitar player, I suck as a computor operator and therefore I dont know how to copy and paste them to the post here...If ya send me a PM or email address I show ya what IM talkin about

suppose ANYONE can play, but i've been trying for a year now...not sure i got it yet, but...be confident and keep going...eventually you'll learn SOMETHING...even if it's only "Happy Birthday" it feels good once you can show yourself you've accomplished something, anything...have fun with it...don't expect to be the next Jimi Hendrix

****advice after reviewing other forums....start small...really small and work your way up. alot of these guys give "beginner" songs that when you look at them, your head spins. either find a song that means something to you...as incentive or look around for 'easy' songs. you won't know until you try them. also, if you truly want to LEARN guitar focus on chords, if you want to PLAY guitar, strickly messing around, or playing other peoples songs..try tabulature.****

From a beginner to another...I hope this helps

The Guitar Handbook - by Ralph Denyer is worth it's weight in gold. It takes you from a know nothing to some very advanced theory. I recommend it to anyone into guitar or wanting to get into guitar.

Lessons can help a lot. So does perseverence. When I started playing almost forty years ago, I had a six-page Mel Bay book that showed how to make the five open chords C, A, G, E, and D and the chords and words to to "On Top Of Old Smokey," "Red River Valley" and "Little Brown Jug." I didn't even know how to tune it until a "big kid" visiting his mom across the street showed me how (and also how to make a barre out of that E-chord), and I knew no one else who played. The net and tabs or videos etc weren't around yet and so I learned completely by figuring out tunes on 45 rpm records slowed down to 33 1/3 rpm speed. (And watching guys on American Bandstand!) But I learned anyway. It would have been a helluva lot easier and faster with lessons or decent books or instructional videos, etc, but the most important part is the perseverence and dedication. If you don't give up, and you practice regularly, you WILL be able to play the damned thing finally! wink.gif
