Building an acoustic is a big thing.Unlike an electric its not just a plank of wood with strings on.Theres plenty of infomation out there and id look into it carefully first. You need alot of specialist tools to do an acoustic and they dont come cheap.Acoustics is really my thing and i can help you all the way through but it would take me forever to give advise on every little problem you might come up with.My advice would be firstly look into the cost of tools and materials and see if you really want to do this. Then if you do get some books on the subject.Do your research. When i first got into acoustic building i never realised it was going to be 100 times more difficult than i thought.Dont get me wrong im not trying to put you off i think its great when people decide they want to build an acoustic insted of the useual electric but i dont want to sit and say yeah its easy mate and its going to be cheap cos id be lieing. The tools are a big investment. If you go for it great and good luck with it.feel freee to ask me at any stage in the game from the mould to the finish.

It's going to cost you just as much, if not more, to build your own guitar. If you are planning to do a good job don't cheap out on materials or tools.

Materials wise you could probly buy materials that could give you a guitar that sounded as good as one you would pay 3 grand and up for as little as 200.But yes tools dont come cheap but once you have them you have them and you can just keep going building guitars better than what you buy in the shop for a fraction of the price.

Just IMO most lutheirs are woodworkers who happen to play a little guitar, no guitar players that play a little with wood. I think its a great idea and encourage you to do it. Do you have a band saw, drum sander, 20" planer, table saw, full set of flat and round chisels, clamps, work table, humidifier, couple of block planes, and the list goes on and on. Just from my past experiences start off with cheap wood build a couple of guitars and then start purchasing higher quality woods. Oh and buy your fret board already fretted, off the net I wouldn't attemp to make one myself. Good luck

Well Daddio let me give you the skinny...Im in the same boat you are in, but I have done hours upon hours of research for the past 5 months or so.. As the others have replied their can be a number of costs and when buying tools buy the best, crappy tools wear quickly and will have to be replaced over and over...If you are planning to build only 1 or 2 acoustics, buy a kit.. Dont waste your money on equipment if you are only going to build 1 or 2 guitars..The kits come in several varieties wilh different types of tone woods.. Go to www.stew-mac.com or search for stew mac go to their kits , you can look at the online step by step instructions and that will let you know what your getting into..These kits also come w/a video or dvd. Many guitar schools use these kits for teaching.. U can also go to LMI (luthiers Mercantile) they offer a wide variety of kits.. Or martin guitars..If you are going to start this as a hobby start w/a kit then start collecting your tools needed..You can get all of your tools from stew mac and luthiers merc, grizzly tools...Home depot or lowes for some, DONT BUY CHEAP TOOLS ...GO TO THE MIMF Forum... www.mimf.com Music info makers forum.. I have learned all from these guys...They are all professional and amatuer builders thier and ALL your questions will be answered...Also buy the book Guitarmaking by Natelson and Cumpiano..Best on the market all pros will agree..Also go to Frets.com for some good reading and instruction..Go to this site also http://pweb.jps.net/~kmatsu/ she is an amatuer builder also... Good Luck Stu
