This is an amazing concert and ended up being Nirvana's last in the USA. Kurt would ask that the stage be decorated with candles and flowers everywhere. Nirvana's distorted grunge sound was replaced with the beautiful acoustic versions of these songs. Some would think that taking away that trademark distortion would make these songs sound less and not as strong but Kurt and the rest of Nirvana's unplugged work suddenly makes these songs sound even more amazing. The band opens with "About A Girl". This catchy song, released on Bleach sounds even better with this softer slightly slower version. This was the first version of the song i ever heard and I quickly placed it as one of my favourite Nirvana songs. I will also mention by this point Nirvana had added Pat Smear as second guitarist and it gave them a fuller sound and gave Kurt some room to experiment. The live album also features great acoustic versions of Nirvana songs like "Polly", "Pennyroyal Tea", "Come As You Are" and others. It also features one of my favourite Nirvana songs, that i find is underrated, "SOmething In the Way". This song was just meant to be played solo acoustic and sounds great, love Kurts voice on this song. Guests, the Meat Puppets also perform with Kurt for the covers of "Oh Me", "Lake of Fire" and "Plateau". Kurts voice goes along great with "Lake of Fire" and there is a nice acoustic solo in there. Nirvana also plays covers of "Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" but i believe that the best cover they did in this concert was the one of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World". This is a fantastic job, sounds great unplugged and Kurts voice is so perfect for it. Its one of those covers that is better than the original (and that pretty hard to do for David Bowie songs). Kurts' voice sounds so great on these songs, not with the normal screaming you hear on the other albums.
This album is actually Nirvana's top selling album, beating Nevermind, and is one of the best live albums recorded. It features alot of great acoustic work by Kurt Cobain that could keep you strumming that old acoustic for a long while. Great stuff. The band is on top and even better Kurt is performing his best on this album.
