Pick a simple chord progression... say... E A B E. Then experiment with the "voicings" of the chords that make it up. Maybe E (simple E 022100), Asus4 or Asus2 (X02230 or X02200), B9 or B7 or B7#9 (X21222 or X21202 or X21230) and maybe E9 022132.
If you like the sound of the suspended chords, look at what changed-note it is that gives it that sound. Then make the same changes with any other chord you might want to try. Same with ninths, or sevenths or add9's (one of James Taylor's favorites... Eadd9 is 0242100, Aadd9 is X02420, Dadd9 is X00970 (or X00030 with a suspended 4).
In place of simple minors (like Em 022000 or Am X02210) try minor-add9ths, like Em+9 022032 or Am+9 X02410.
This is why basic chord theory is so important, to me the most important part of playing (as opposed to lead-scales, etc). I'm no "theory-Nazi type by any means! The most important part of playing is to first get the sound you want from the chord progression. Just knowing what simple notes make up a simple chord, and what some basic note-changes can do to their "feel" isn't hard to learn at all, and makes a big difference in your playing.

Un-plugged is not the same as

C sustained sounds pretty cool just play a C and put your pinky on the third fret on the g string
You mean from an open C major (x32010) chord? Wouldn't a x32310 by a C7?

"There are easier ways of playing this, no doubt, but that's not the point."

Some of these aren't exactly uncommon, but they're different ways to play some chords. I think these are the correct names for these anyway
