G'day all,
Has anyone had anything to do with Galveston 7 & 8 string basses? I've heard that they are reasonably priced but what is the sound quality/playability like?
I currently use an Ibanez SR1306 and Fretless SR886 6-string basses. I am curious to see how much wider and how much harder they are to play.
Many thanks in advance.
Jamie

I haven't played a Galveston 8 string, but I have played a Rouge 8 string. I think there is something of a difference between a 7 and 8 string though. A seven string has seven different strings where an 8 string bass is something like a twelve string guitar. So your two low strings would be tuned to E (actually, D would be better so you don't warp the neck) and so on.

the bass talked about above is tuned BEADGCF# not EADG in doubles as u say.

G'day all,
The 7 string is F#BEADGC and the 8 string is F#BEADGCF. These are the ones I was inquiring about.
There are 8 strings that are played in octaves as there are 10 strings played in octaves.
I am very curious to hear what they are like because my wife has said I might be able to buy one.
Cheers,
Jamie

5strings in doubles tuned BEADG would be quite nasty. i imagine they would be only EADGC.
ur right about the tuning. i was wrong, the high F isnt F#. my bad

G'day mahrous,
I tend to agree with you about the 10 string.
It would be pretty hard on the hands trying to hold down a BBEEAADDGG.

Jees! Talk about under the thumb!!! Go ahead and buy one, and then when she nags, just show her how much of a virtuoso on the ten string you are!

So there is an 8 string that is doubled and one that has 8 strings seperate. Well, I've learned something. I was thinking double because my girlfriend has an 8 string double. When I played bass, I always thought 6 strings were too much. I couldn't imagine what an 8 string would be like. Actually, I've never heard of an 8 string that wasn't doubled. I'd heard of 7, but not 8.

Do not follow Dan advice!!! He is a naive young man
Don't fight with your wife, you just can't win!!!
Hmmm..... after carefully considering Dan's advice
I wonder how many 8 string basses are in Australia? I guess I'll have to order replacemnet sets of strings from the US.
Thanks for everyone's help.
Cheers,
Jamie

After a quick search (a very quick one tho) on juststrings.com, the only 8 strings pack for bass i saw was for doubled bass like Billy16 was talking about. I'm afraid that in order to re-string your bass you will have to mix pack of strings... I saw a lot of 6 strings pack for bass tho.
it may end up very costly to re-string your new toy

8strings sets do not exist. if u want strings for an 8strings bass, u gotta order them separates from people like Ken Smith, Conklin, Fodera and so on. Companies that make extended range instruments, do usually make strings for them
Thanks mahrous.
The Ebay shop that I bought it through can supply replacement custom sets for $US50 a set.
I should have the bass some time in the next 2 weeks.
Cheers,
Jamie

G'day all,
After only waiting for a week, my new 8-string turned up in the mail.
I hastily organised a jam night at a local rehearsal studio with a bunch of guys I used to play regularly with.
I am very happy with my purchase. The neck is only a little wider than my 6 string basses. I can comfortably reach everywhere I need to on the bass.
The bass has a pretty good passive sound but it really growls when the active electronics are kicked in.
The low end has plenty of presence but it needed a tweak of the EQ to make the bottom string notes discernible from each other.
I think that with a little practice, this bass could become the first bass I pick up when I go to record or gig. I think I'm in love........
