Hi guys,
I realise this should probably be in the Tab Request forum, but I figured I'd probably get more help here.

I realise this should probably be in the Tab Request forum, but I figured I'd probably get more help here.

I recently heard this song and I love it. I was wondering if anyone knows of or could point me towards a Tab for it? And if possible, in the easiest tuning possible.

John Hurt did two versions of a similar tune. One he called "Casey Jones" and the other he called "Talkin' Casey" (slide, "...don't leave me here..." etc). Each was done in a different style.

"Casey Jones" was a fingerstyle in standard tuning in the key of A (although I think he capoed on the first or second fret to Ab or B ). It's an eight-bar (eight 4/4 paired couplets) I-IV-II-V progression. He used the chords A, D, B and E played fingerstyle.

"Talkin' Casey" he did in open-G tuning DGDGBD. John played knife-slide. It's a very primative kind of slide (my mentor John Jackson, who was good friends with John Hurt, played slide the same way). The slide lines with knife-slide are always very simple. Usually on just the first (and ocassionally second) strings, with an alternating thumb acompaniement on the other strings.

Knife-slide is usually a very delicate gentle kind of slide. It was played usually with a pocket-knife, the blade opened half-way and held between the fingers (usually pinky and ring) and the actual sliding was done with the handle, which used to commonly be made of brass way back then. As brass-handled pocket knives became less common it gradually faded from use. John Jackson switched to a silver butter-knife handle, the blade removed, held between his pinky and ring. John (Jackson) was not what one might call a slide-master bluesman like say Fred McDowell or Bukka White maybe. Neither was John Hurt, but both could lay down a beautiful haunting slide tune when they wanted. John Jackson did "Talkin' Casey" and a very primative (I use that word in the most complimentary way) version of "John Henry" using knife-slide.

Band-leader WC Handy mentioned his first time ever hearing blues played in this way in 1903 as he waited for a train one night in an empty train-station in Tutwiler, Mississippi in his autobiography...

"... a lean, loose-jointed Negro had commenced plunking a guitar beside me while I slept. His clothes were rags, his feet peeped out of his shoes. His face had on it the sadness of the ages. As he played, he pressed a knife on the strings of the guitar. The effect was unforgettable. His song struck me instantly... "Goin' ta' where the Southern cross' the dog..."


(I remember that passage because it is the earliest known recorded reference to using a slide for blues guitar.)

Casey Jones is the subject of a number of old blues-tunes and folk tunes. The old bluesman Furry Lewis also did an excellent version in fingerstyle and slide. Probably the best version I've ever heard (and I've heard lots) was taught to me by an old fiddler/guitarist from (honest... this is the name of the place) Beaver Bottom, Kentucky. He used an unusual tuning (first time I'd ever seen it) he called "Scotch-B" which is an altered (not open) tuning E F# B F# B E.

Anyway, that's how you'd approach John Hurt's "Casey Jones" and "Talkin' Casey."

Thanks for the info DADFAD. I really enjoy hearing about all the old Blues legends and techniques. That knife-slide part was fascinating, just a sort of make-do thing isn't it.

So, is there actually a tab for 'Casey Jones' in standard, I really love the way MJH plays it? I think I came across that 'Scotch-B' version in an old post. How would I tune to that? (I'm no good with this sort of stuff...)

Another song of MJH's I really like is C.C. Rider, such a nice melody line. So if you guys know of a tab for that, I'd be grateful.

I'll tab a progression of it. I'll do it in G. Like I mentioned above, he did it in A but capoed a fret to A# too. Let me also say he recorded the tune at least four times. I have (buried somewhere in my records) at least two of them. I first learned it in A (A#) off the LP by Rounder Records he recorded around 1964. I also have another old LP (by Gyphon Records in '63) where he did it in G. He has others with that tune on it (and also on several "live" recordings, including one recorded in Washington DC of him and John Jackson together). He has even recorded it under the title of "K.C. Jones." I think (not positive but pretty sure, having heard it on the radio several times) that the version on his newer "Greatest Hits" CDs is in G. It can be done in either and isn't too difficult to transpose the lines from one key to another. He may have also done that A# version capoed on the 3rd fret and then played "as if" in G (which would make it in A# too.) Actually, it's probably slightly more easily played in G than A anyway. I can do it in either key but I'm gonna use G unless you prefer otherwise.

I was playing along with the capo on 1st and I noticed when I did an E (i'm not quite sure what that is with a capo. F?) it sounded like the first chord of the version I have. I think A (B-flat?) was the second chord, and F# (G?) was there as well. I couldn't figure out the other chords though.

To be honest I'd never tried it in E (or another capoed E-style). I guess either his key of G or A (A#) versions could also have been capoed farther up the neck still and then played "as if" in E. I just tried it with a guitar here in my office and it wasn't really any harder to play in E than in G. (By the way, when I say something like "in E" I'm meaning using chord-shapes like playing it in E, with or without a capo. Not "Key of E.") So, I just tried playing it in G (as I always have) and then capoed the third-fret and played it in E. They both sounded almost identical.

I think it was slightly easier to make the change from the I-chord to the II-chord (with those walking-bass notes) using G (G to A) than using E (E to F#), but that might just be because I've used G for so many years for that tune in John Hurt's version. (Actually, whenever I do the tune playing out and have no reason to specifically use John Hurt's style, I do the tune in the key of B using that "Scotch-B" tuning.)

Anyway, I'll do a round in G.

(I think I solved the "mystery" of the recording you have in the key of F. I found one in my records last night at home in the key of F that he did on a 12-string guitar. It was probably tuned down a whole step and then played as if in G. That's probably the version you're talking about!)

its not an acoustic song however, both Jerry and Bob are playing electric in that ong but it can be played acousticlly with no probs.

Here's what I have for one of Mississippi John Hurt's recordings of "Casey Jones". I didn't go into every finger/string detail like I did on some tunes I've tabbed. I can if you want me too, but the whole thing can be played with the thumb and index and for the most part it's easy to see which is used where ( except a couple of brief places where the thumb might drop down to the higher strings too and pick with the index). I'm working on another tune for someone and so I figured I'd add the really detailed notes to the tab-lines on this one later so I can get it posted here now, so if you want them just let me know. In the TRUE key of Ab, but he capoed on the 3rd fret
and then played as if in G. Using G 320003; C X32010;
"Long-A" X02225; and D X00232 (from the capo). I did
the same thing on my tabbed sound-byte section. The
entire tune can be played using the thumb and index
fingers to pick with. The G is best held RMOOOP to
make changes on the 1st-string easier, and also for
switching to the C-chord X32010 XRMOIO. Your index
finger will move between both the 5 and 6 string on
that one, the pinky adds notes on and off the 1 and
2 strings on the 3rd-fret. The D-chord is however
you prefer to hold it. The "long-A" chord is made
by barring the 2nd-fret strings 1,2,3 and 4 with
the index and adding the pinky on the 1st-string,
5th-fret. Generally the thumb will play the bassier
strings and the index the treblier ones, however in
a few brief parts (like in the last G-sections) it
easier to use both the thumb and index in the treble-
string area. And that's about it...
