I have an acoustic that has metal strings, and was wondering if it was possible to change over to nylon.

The simple answer is - No, you can't.

This question has been asked many times in this forum before, and I believe, not too long ago. So go back a little while or do a search and you'll find the info you need.

EDIT - I remember my first ever post on here was asking if I can put nylons on a steel string so Here it is... Ok, so it was ages back, but this is just 'cos I couldn't be bothered searching through them all...

it's fine just get the strings that have the ball on the end and it'll work fine thought the tuning might be a bit off.

you can, but it's not something you should do. different strings are meant to be used on different guitars. you could try martins silk and steels if you want a mellower sound, but don't put nylons on it.

Like I said nylon are for clasical guitars...

They sound pittyful even on a guitar like that...I don't know why someone would preffer nylon strings when there is quite a variety of steel strings with different sounds...

But what am I saying...go ahead and try...find out for yourself...

ohmy.gif dont do it
your acoustic has been designed to take the pressue of metal strings and will warp in time if you put nylon on it.
buy a classical guitar at a boot sale for 10 and see if you like the sound enough to spend more wink.gif

Yes it is possible to do, but DO NOT do it would be my advice. Its a different instrument and you will more than likely damage it. If you dont damage your instrument you wont be doing the sound quality any good anyway, so all-in-all - dont!

it's not going to do anything bad to your guitar like i said before though the tuning will be off. the lighter tension will not cause the neck to bow back. i've done it with one of mine and it's been like that for like a year now, and not surprisingly there is no damage.

I think people are getting a bit confused here. Putting nylon strings on a steel string is not going to do any damage and certainly wont warp it. Done the other way round and thats a different story. You can do it but take into accont your intonatinns going to be wank and the various differences in constrution. Braceing patterns and the angle of the neck mainly. You can go ahead and do it but i wouldnt really advise it but it wont harm the guitar you will most likely just think got this is crap and but a new set of steels thats all.
