Well, this has got to be the fifth or so topic I've made about looking at some more acoustic guitars. I like to assume myself to pick out at least an OK guitar, but I don't have the experience to exactly pick out one that should be good just by seeing it. I have to play it, and I realize that is the only way to COMPLETELY know. But there are just a few more guitars I wanna look into playing since I've now planned a little road trip across the Virginias sometime soon to play a few models.

Here's the first:
Western Classic J-200

Second:
Chet Atkins SST Studio

Third:
AC12NT by Ibanez

Those are the three that caught my eye on this recent go-around. As far as the Chet Atkins goes, I looked at the Gibson one, and aside from have the Star Inlay, I'm curious if there would actually be a significant difference.

Here's a link to it if it helps:
Chet Atkins SST (Gibson model)

Thanks in advance, and I'm sorry I keep posting these topics, but this is actually the best way I learn certain things. guitar.gif

The most I can tell from looking at the Gibson Chet Atkins SST and the Epiphone one is that the Epiphone one is skinnier at the nut and that it's mahogany and maple whereas the Gibson is mahogany and spruce, but you also get a choice with it...and I think the pickups are different...but they look exactly the same 'cept for the stars...

The Gibson Chet comes (or at least used to come) in two neck/nut widths. The wider was 1 7/8" and the narrower 1 11/16" (if I remember correctly). Between those guitars you mentioned my choice would be an easy one... the Gibson J-200. But of course it's just my preference and the stuff I play.

I dont really see theres much to even think about here. The j200 has a solid spuce top and solid rosewood back and sides. Discussion over the other two dont get a look in. I mean the chet has a maple top why even consider it?

Edit that i just saw the link to the gibson chet and yes of course theres a huge difference the gibson one has a solid spruce top. I dont know if the sides are solid as it doesnt say but if we asume they are then it can be considered worth of an option if we assume they arnt then its not even worth looking at.

Maybe its just me but any acoustic not made of solid woods just isnt worth considering. Even your high end model factory made acostics from leading brands these days sound weak compared to there vintage models without bringing plywood into it.

i think the problem with this choice stems from the price. i agree with you adds, the gibson straight off but i dont see why the others are even being considered in the same range as the gibson. its a completely different class of guitar.

Couldnt agree more mate.

Thanks everyone. My biggest concern wasn't so much getting these guitars anytime soon. I was planning on buying one my senior year of high-school by putting a bit of money aside from each paycheck to go towards it. It wouldn't be a drastic amount considering I'll still be paying for gas, insurance, and throwing a little bit in for education. So, as you can see, despite that it won't be a WHOLE lot, over two years, it'll add up I'm hoping.

But, since I'm not 100% on how much I'll have, I'm letting any guitar at this point be a bit of an option since my parants have agreed to help if I feel it truely is worth getting. My goal is to try and find these guitars in shops acroos West Virginia and Virginia so I can give them a play, and better make my decision.

But thanks to everyone who responded. happy.gif
