I've just joined and I thought I better say Hi to everyone, I did not see an intro section so I just thought I would post in this section as I love my Acoustic guitars.

hi. welcome to gtu
having no idea of your level of ability, i'll just say feel free to ask any question you want. even if you think it is trivial. hope you like the site, stay out of discussion if you want to keep your sanity and calm though

Best advice I've ever heard.
:::Edit:::
Oh, and welcome! Check out the sticky profile thread at the top of the page, it's more of an Intro than anything else we have.

Thanks. He was a very patient teacher, the finest human being I've ever had the honor to call my friend, and considered by many to be the finest fingerstyle traditional country-bluesman alive before his death.
Again, welcome to GTU, and the Acoustic Forum.

Hi dadfad, did Mr John Jackson make any recordings and if so do you have any of the albums etc. I checked out Limewire but did not get any results for him.
I love all the old blues players, they just knew how to make fantastic music, its such a shame that they had to move on.

Yes, he made quite a few. John had given me an autographed copy of everything he'd ever recorded and I also have hours and hours of him playing informally and at various concerts he played where I recorded him. Lots of video and 8mm stuff too, some of which has been borrowed and used in documentaries by others. Here are links to a few brief sound-bytes of some of his tunes.

@ dadfad WOW now that is what you call a guitarist.
Mississippi John Hurts and Big Bill Broonzy automatically sprang to my mind when I heard him play.
Is there anywhere that you can download any of his music, or do you have any album names that I could search for.
I live in the UK and its kind of hard trying to find recordings by some of the old time guitarists.
I hope you learned well when you were having your lessons
Oh and thanks for the sound-bytes
Many Thanks JohnnyBeGood

I found a couple of his CDs available at Amazon.UK. As a matter of fact, they are probably two of my favorites by him, re-releases of some earlier Arhoolie Records LPs I have. Also, I'm willing to send any tunes of his I have stored in Windows-Media or Real-Player (which is quite a few) through msn-messenger if someone would explain to me how to do that (as I'm not the most computer-literate person here by any means!) or however is the best way to share tunes. (John and his wife Cora are both dead and I don't worry about any royalties various record companies may or may not get from file-sharing.)
JohnnyB, I learned from John over a period of about twenty-five years, so he taught me quite a bit. He had no problem sitting for hours patiently trying to teach a young (at first!) white-boy how to play his blues.

is there not some kind of fund that his royalties go into so his family or a charity get them?
last time i tried to get dont let your deal go down they told me it was out of stock for the forseeable future, i'll have to try again.
Okay, Gav, I will. Let me know about when you'll be going back.
I'm sure there is some kind of a royalty-stipend his heirs would get. John Jackson was not a wealthy man. Most of his life he was quite poor. Near the end of his life he was "re-discovered" and afterwards made a pretty good living recording and touring around the world. Not a great amount of money, but just a pretty comfortable living. However, his small farm in rural Virginia over the years became surrounded by wealthy Washington DC suburbs. The land his small farm was on became worth several millions of dollars. He would never sell it during his lifetime. His wife died before him, his son was mistakenly shot and killed by police about ten years before John's death. (John's son was a janitor at the county high-school. He called the police on his night shift job to report an attempted break-in at the school. As he ran to un-lock the doors for the police to enter, they mistakenly thought he was the burglar and shot him dead through the glass. There was quite a large settlement for that eventually paid out which also became part of John's estate.) John's heirs do not need to worry about a few pennies worth of royalties.
Maybe a simpler way would be for me to temporarily post some tunes to a SoundClick band-page I create and then allow them to be down-loaded.
