how long has that set been on? More than three months, he should probably change them
what gague are they? if they are too light they will snap, i like to use 10's
does he look after his guitar? keep it clean etc, it wont damage the strings, but it dulls the tone, he should was his hands first to get of germs

Tell him to take it softly and if he's using a pick tell him to stop...
That is the stupidest advice i've ever heard, most people that dont have steel fingertips need picks to play guitar, why the hell would he stop?

Oke.. my strings dont break with getting in contact with my pick.. And yeah on a accoustic you dont need really a pick but my strings not even break on the accoustisch while i using a pick.
If strings break while using a pick, why people invented them and why are many people using picks???? But oke..
It can be that the pick is to think for the string and than you have to pick harder then normal... for a good sound. Try in that a case, a thinner pick.. That can be ''A'' possibillty..
It can also be (i read this somewhere) some things sticking out on your fretboard.
Its like something is sharp what hits the strings an make him brake.. But i am not really sure.. because i dont know really how to put this...

Upstrokes using a pick (especially by a beginner) could well break strings but it probably is just that fact that they are old.
true, alot of beginners don't know to "lean" the pick when strumming,
