I want to start recording more of what I'm playing.

All I have is a mic and a PC with a pretty good sound card in it.

What programs do you all use?
What does their family tree look like? A stump!?

If you want something free, audacity is pretty good.

I use a decent mic, not great, with my media center pc so the soundcards great. And i just use audacity. The only problem is putting tracks on top of each other, the timing gets screwed up cheers.gif

Yeah, I've got Audacity. Thing is, I used to always use the Nero WAV Editor, 'cos it had a pretty good reverb setting on it just to make your recording sound a bit more like what you were hearing, rather than what was coming out the other end of your PC. I can't find a setting on Audacity that does the same thing. The reverb is more like a delay.

The Nero I have with my new PC doesn't have the WAV Editor, and I didn't want to pay out for a plug in. I just got infected with a really bad trojan trying to get a s****l crack for it (yes I know, I got what I deserved...).

Are there any other programs, other than Audacity that are free around the internet for recording? Or do you know of any good ones that are maybe worth shelling out a few quid for, specifically for recording?

Thanks for replying.

Also, does a decent mic make that much of a difference using something like Audacity? Maybe I need a better mic more than better program, bearing in mind I'm not going to be recording Dark Side of the Moon any time soon :-)

I use a £2 microphone attached to my pick-guard with blu-tac. Maybe a more expensive mic would sound better, but it works wink.gif

If you've got a decent recording mic, it's going to make a difference, regardless of what program you're useing. Also, the program you use can make a rather big difference too.

I use Adobe Audition, which might be expensive, but it is very much worth the money. It has alot of different effects that I havn't seen on too many recording programs. (Reverb, Echo, Flanger, etc.) It also has a very good multi-track mode that is great for layering different audio clips together. It takes a little bit more time to get use too, but it's very much worth the money in my opinion.

I personally, have a horrible computer mic... and I don't feel like losing any more face by talking about it... O.o

ANYWAY, Audobe Audition is one of the better recording programs I've come across. It's not free, but I'm pretty sure you can probably download a trial version at Adobe's website to see if you think it's worth the money or not.

Yeah I see that Adobe Audition, I was going to try the demo, but then I saw the price of the full version... It is a bit expensive.

So I got myself a new mic, and a program called Guitar Tracks Pro 32. I'm impressed with the difference to what I what using so it'll do for me for a while I think. Only thing was my PC decided to stop recording through the mic, very annoying, got it sorted now though. Computers noani.gif

So anyway, thanks for the replies chaps.

adobe audition ranges from approximately 0$
to 350(US)$.

depending on what website you download it from, of course
there's the official adobe website,

and another one called limewir[connection error: unable to view the following text. please report this 'error' to the forum administrator.]

I also use audacity, have been for about a year now, problem is, i remix songs and you cant really put things in place correctly. If you take the chorus and put it at the start u need to add silence and remove it again, well what isnt needed and you can never get anything bang on correct timing. I am currently trying Fruity Loops and Power Tracks Pro Audio, both the demo versions tho. I cant get the hang of FL and Power Tracks hasnt got that lovely feeling you get with audacity. Like playing Pro Evo on an XBOX.

Cakewalk Sonar is where it's at; I've tried a myriad of programs and this is by far the best that I've found. Limewire is very good, as is Emule, for finding this stuff yesani.gif

After getting a pretty nasty trojan downloading something for Nero from Limewire, and ending up restoring my whole system, I decided to go out and spend some money.

The program I bought is a Cakewalk program, Guitar Tracks Pro 32. It's not Sonar, but I'm happy with it for the money a shelled out.

I like ACID PRO or COOLEDIT PRO to record multiple endless tracks.

I use a Event1 EZBUS digital mixer USB interface to the PC to record.
