Start off with a few chords, G, A, Em, C, and D... try to get the fingering down, and then start trying to switch between them. Practice, practice, practice, and when it feels like the strings are knives cutting into your uncaloused fingers keep on practicing, because that means its working.
Everyone told me to start by playing Dylan's knocking on heavens door, Its the same 4 chords over and over... another good 1st song is good riddance by greenday. But try to get over the hump of changing chords without totally messing up the rhythm.
The most important thing though is to not get discouraged... aspecially if you are self-taught like me... because it wil only get easier. I remember how much I freaked back when my fingers couldn't even make a G.

oh, and i kinda skimmed over the "kinda", so if this is all baby advice thats over and done with then accept my appoligies.

Don't give up! And keep learning!

in my opinion: practise more and more.

change chords more and more. c to d and g and f

practise C D E F G Em Bm B bB ........the chords.

at the first F is complex to .but with a lot of practice it will go easily.

sorry .my english is poor .because i'm chinese.......

Good advice, Chinese, and a welcome to GTU for you both. Don't worry about your English, Chinese (which is much better than my Mandarin! laugh.gif ) Here we are from around the world, and just do the best we can to help each other.

Practice chords and changing through them, as Chinese and Vmorrisette has suggested. Especially the "open" (near the nut) chords of C A G E and D. And then their simple variations like changed to minors or 7ths. The F-chord (the 1st-fret barre-chord) is often the hardest to hold for those just getting into making barre-chords. But practice makes perfect.

A good tune to start with and use for practice is a simple chord version of the old Hendrix tune "Hey Joe" because its progression uses all the open major chords...

[C]Hey, [G]Joe. [D]Where you [A]goin' with that [E]gun in your hand?

That same progression is repeated for every line.

-HEY JOE-
-by Billie Roberts
(also Jimi Hendrix, The Leaves and others)

Hey, Joe. Where you goin' with that gun in your hand.

Goin' down an' shoot my ol' lady. Caught her messin' round with another man.

Hey Joe, can you tell me where you gonna go?

Hey Joe, won't ya tell me where you gonna go?

I'm runnin' down to Mexico, find a place where I can be free.

Find a place where there ain't no hangman tryin' to put his noose around me.
Un-plugged is not the same as
never-was-plugged-in-to-begin-with.

Dadfad, thank you for saying that. i feel so warm.guitar make us together.

i like THE beatles's yesterday,and radiohead's

creep and exit music are my favourits.

Every time I listen to is excited

and they are Suitable for playing too.

When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You're so ######ing special
But I 'm a creep
I 'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here

I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice
When I'm not around
You're so ######ing special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here

She's running out again
She's running out
She run, run, run run
Run

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so ######ing special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here
I don't belong here.

Practice is really good, even though it hurts.
Don't be afraid to learn anything anyone wants to show you,
you can modify it later if you like.
Most of the stuff i've learned so far has come from
other guitarists i've run into!!!
Also, listen for songs you want to learn and find people who can
show them to you or look up the tabs and toil toil toil to get
them right. Start with the not so incredibly difficult material, but
you can challenge yourself if you like.
Have fun.

Just practice your butt off... you can teach yourself most things you need to know, like chords and scales. just remember it wont come easy at first and dont give up
