I'm going to try out some new acoustics later this week, my budget is around £250 (about $450 I think).

I know the shop stocks a lot of Ovations, Ibanezs and Yamahas and I think it has a good few Martins as well.
Any reccomendations on what to try?

I would suggest a Martin or a Takamine, I know those are very nice in quality and sound. Though I think Martins run alittle bit more than $450, Ovations are nice too it really depends on what you like.

Ovations are good if you have a bit of intention on plugging in alot and useing some effects. Martin and all the others have a wonderful unplugged sound from my experiences.

I personally have an Ovation guitar, and even though you can hear a decent difference when playing with a normal acoustic, it sounds fine unplugged. I've, in fact, noticed that it tends to be able to cut through other sound a bit better than some.

I recently was in the market for a nice acoustic so I went to the local music store and started comparing a few... I eventually narrowed it down to Takamine and Yamaha... I went to the music store 4 times to play on the 2 diff guitars that I had picked out and eventually the Yamaha LL6 won, it has such a nice sound and seemed far superior over the takamine... I paid 500 for it but you can find one int he 450 range I'm sure... But whatever you do don't purchase one because of us say too... make sure its the one that you like the most regardless of name brand.

Just play what the guys in the shop recommend, then decide on your favourite.

Best way to do that it so go in and tell a Saleman what your price range is. Have him show you all the guitars in your budget and play them all. Take a friend a long with you, preferably one who also plays guitar. Find the ones that feel good, then have your friend play them while you stand 10 or more feet away and listen. That allows you to hear the projected sound really well, which you can't do as well from the playing position.

Try an Epiohone, I don't like Ovations for some reason. Their sound is too distinctive..

I love Ovations. The necks Ovations/Adamas has is my favorite neck profile.

Ovations as a whole don't sound to great unplugged, but they weren't "really" designed to be played unplugged especially the shallow bodied models....but plug them in to a decent acoustic amp, man oh man does it sound good.
