You have to have a better ear than you do with guitar. There are no frets on a violin so you have to be able to 'tune' the notes, if that makes any sense. Its really best to have someone to teach you or someone else who plays one of the string instruments (i.e. violin, viola, 'cello, bass) to practice with. I think the biggest problem you'd have would be intonation. Its pretty hard at first.

I play viola, and I used to play the violin, so if you have any questions, just pm me and I'll be glad to help wink.gif

Lots of people play the violin - it's not impossible - but it is more difficult, due in part to the lack of frets & use of a bow instead of a guitar pick. Even going from mandolin to violin will be more difficult than, say, guitar to mandolin or guitar to banjo.

Side note but guitar to mandolin was a freaking breeze. Same concept, different tuning, so the patterns change slightly.

I took up the Violin a few years before I picked up the guitar. It's harder to teach yourself, but with some practice books, and effort, youll be playing the 1812 in no time wink.gif

I'd suggest getting some starting lessons. There are certain ways to hold the instrument/bow and play it that a trained instructor will be able to help you with, moreso than just a book.

The violin has the same strings as a guitar, minus the second e and the b. The strings are g,d,a,e going from lowest to highest. I personally find the violin easier to learn then the guitar because you don't have to worry about chords or 6 strings. You do however have to control the arm you use to bow. In general, it isn't easy to teach violin to yourself, but there are books and beginners guides that will teach you the basics.

In general, violin is harder to learn for a gutiarist, mostly because lack of frets and the strings are much closer together, and you need better control of the bowing hand. Also, the violin takes (I don't know how to put his, but I'll try my best) more theory, in a way, than gutiar. For example, you can print guitar tabs and chords, but for violin it's just standard notation. I had 6 years of violin when I started guitar, which makes gutiar a lot easier.

I strongly suggest you take lessons for violin.

Ive played the violin for 9 years. its not really that daunting of an instrument. the piano for me is the most difficult cuz of coordination. in the beggining u tape to mark ur finger placement. they are not that far aprt and gettin used to it takes just as much time as finding comfort with the guitar. yes the strings are closer though not much but the position of ur wrist is such that it is easy to pinpoint a single string. u dont have tablature. its a classical instrument tab is a new musical notation. besides ur mainly playing one note at a time and if u play more that one string at a time the finger patterns arent near as complex as guitar chords. my advice if u want it do it r cry about it. play on mozart

I've played violin for 16 years and it starts off hard but once you get the hang of it then you can be surprised what you can rise to the challenge of. Just start off slow as in back to Twinkle Twinkle. Most kids start off with the Suzuki books. These are good because they all come with tapes too so you can hear what you're supposed to sound like. Find a friend to tape off the notes too so you can get used to placing your fingers there. (Just like Caseyasue said). If you really don't want to pay for a few lessons then I would find a friend who has played a stringed instrument and full of patience. It really needs to be someone who has played either violin or viola because the wrist structure is important as well as bow technique and placement.

In conclusion, it isn't the easiest to learn but that many first graders can't be wrong.

I've played violin for 7 years, and unlike guitar, making the thing sound good requires ability to play, so yeah it's comparatively hard. it's an instrument with which you have to start from the very bottom, whereas with guitar you can kind of start at any level. There's a lot of requirements for correct posture and stuff.

But it has a beautiful sound, so the hardships are made up for a lot if you can out in the effort!

I played Cello for five years before guitar, and guitar seems pretty easy to me. Cello requires more bow-hand technique than guitar, so it'll take a while to get used to. All in all, the Cello is a wonderful instrument to learn because note spacings are similar to guitar, and the tone is deep and beautiful.

Cubbies are going all the way this year!

I got a violin today thinking it wouldn't be too much of a change from guitar but it's pretty tricky. I got a used one with a case and a bow for only $108.
