This will be my first acoustic ever. And I dont want to get a crappy one, but not too expensive. I'm not sure if I should get the acoustic electric or the acoustic. So if you have opinnions, give em.

as far as straight acoustic vs acoustic/electric, i almost always side acoustic. usually the guitars with onboard preamps are much much more and you're not necessarily going to use it that much through an amp. work on getting an acoustic that sounds better on its own, you can add a pickup later if you wish...

Absolutely Great Advice.....The neck width is VERY important to me. I play electric as well and it really sucks when you have to get use to a narrow neck and then go back to the wider one. Also, I would not buy a Taylor under a 300 series as well. For the price, the lower series is not worth it. With Tayor, go all the way or not at all...The name on the headstock doesnt mean a thing if the guitar feels and sounds cheap.

1 7/8" nut-width. While not my personal favorite, Taylor generally makes very well-built good-sounding guitars.

I'd go for a similar priced Takamine, Alvarez or even Yamaha.
I agree. 300 series and above. The 500 series are pretty nice. Taylors are getting expensive by the year. I got a 714 in 2003 for what you can get a 514 now.

Ya I agree there, Taylors are great guitars but a lower end guitar is gonna be lower end quality. Don't believe people that say Yamaha's aren't good. I bought one a few years ago and it's a great guitar with an affordable price tag for a starter guitar, although looking at used guitars is always a good option. Just don't buy until you've seen AND played the guitar you're buying.

Sure they are playable but to equate a Yammie to a Taylor? Other than the solid spruce top, the rest is laminate.

Yes yes yes yes. Don't buy guitars from online stuff... always play it first.

What ever you end up buying, spend a lot of time in your local music shop trying it out first ( and I mean several days!). Then buy it from there, not the internet (unless your local shop sells on the internet cheaper than the in-shop price) Even if this costs you more, it is always worth it, to be able to take the guitar back and discuss any problems.

that's a good rule, but there are a lot of good deals on the web. i wouldn't buy an acoustc off of ebay because i'm much much more particular with acoustics, but I have no problem buying an electric off ebay or another site. It's the only place to go if i want, say, a Gibson Invader from the mid-80's. i'll probably never see one of those in a shop in my life, but they can be had for a few hundred on ebay.
Just be sure you know what you're buying...

I played a custom shop yamaha at Harrods once that was nicer than any taylor I've ever heard.
I don't wanna get into what's a better guitar, but my yammie is an older model and in fact has no laminate parts on it,

True, if I were looking for an extremely rare guitar that was no longer in production, I would probably buy it off of Ebay. But I'd want to try it first. Too many times have I seen guitars (both acoustic and electric) in magazines or on the internet and said... "Damn that looks sweet, I think I want one" then when I find one at the shop I play it for a few minutes and put it back on the rack in disgust. Only a few times have I been pleasently suprised by a guitar that I saw on the internet (a Fender TC-90 a Taylor T5 and a Strat-o-Sonic VII). Usually when I'm looking for a guitar, I ask a guy at my local shop, he has never once dissappointed me with recommendations. Most recent was a guitar for a friend, an Ibanez SZ520. One of the sweetest guitars I have ever played, yet not something I would have looked at otherwise...
Anyway... I'm rambling here. I'll shut up now.
