Well, after making attempt after attempt, I'm finally getting a band together. Well, the idea behind the band is to have a unique sound, or at least avoid trying to conform to what everyone around us wants. The big thing in my area seems to be that whole Punk-Rock crap that I hate. I understand alot of people like it, but I don't, and no one else in the band likes it either.
Well, so far, we want to try and experiment a bit, and try out some new styles for all of us. I personally have been going very deeply into Jazz lately, I play acoustic guitar, and will be the lead vocals. My friend has been playing piano for ten years, and she can fly through Mozart and Beethoven with ease. The other two members are on saxophone and trombone respectivly. My job was to try and find out some older artists of different styles that I could suggest to the members to work on a little bit. I'm just curious if you guys know any.
P.S.
I know we don't have a bassist or a drummer yet, but their hard to find, and we thought it'd be nice to at least get used to each other since we already have plans.

You might want to look into the music of Fats Waller. He was a groundbreaking pianist (for his time) and did a lot of good... proto-jazz I guess... type things. "Good times in Harlem back during prohibition" kind of stuff. I've re-arranged a few of his tunes for fingerstyle guitar. But you already have a good piano-player so that's covered, leaving just nice chording for the guitar and some decoration for the sax and trombone. Jelly-Roll Morton is another in the same vein from the same era. The contemporary-guy Leon Redbone has a lot of stuff recorded that fits that kind of a combo (including pieces with sax and trombone). He's recorded a couple of Fats Waller and Jelly-Roll covers too.
A little closer into actual early more urban-sounding blues (with a fair degree of sophistication) was the guitar-piano duo Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell. Brass/wind could easily be layered over it as well.
Stuff like this is most definately not punk/rock
, and is sort of an.... excursion down a road less travelled... so to speak.

Un-plugged is not the same as

I definatly know what you mean by the DADFAD. We really want to have fun and have a unique sound. Aside from having fun, or biggest reason behind this is to play what we want, and not conform just to make people around us happy. If people like what we play, then cool, if not, we still have a group that can get together and play. And thanks a load for the ideas on who to look into. I've already started lookinga round anywhere I can to get ahold of some of the music taht you mentioned.
As for your question Will, our idea is to do alot of original stuff. I'm not entirley sure what genre it would go under, since it seems like I'm getting stuck being the main songwriter. I guess it would be a sort of Alternative-Rock Jazz sound. I'm not too positive, we plan on mostly just sort of letting that evolve on its own.

I can't be of any help but I wish you luck with this experiment.
I really appriciate that. We aren't getting alot of support around here, even from out families for some reason on this one. Its great to know someone is pullin' for us even in a small way.
