Alright, a friend of mine had a few drinks the other night and stumbled up the stairs with his guitar. they both went down and the guitar got the worse end of the deal. it suffered a big old crack running straight down the front. it's a full on crack going straight through the guitar. it goes all the way down and is cracked on the bottom as well.

is this possible to fix? it wasn't that expensive of a guitar (maybe $400), how much would it cost approximately? what would have to be done?

Get another $400 guitar. Unless it was some magical sounding guitar w/ super action and neck feel, IMO, it's not worth it to fix.

I tend to agree with the above. Its a big job to repair and not really worth it on such an instrument. Well to do it all proper anyway. That said rather than bin it theres no harm in useing it as a bit of practice for your own repair skills. If you want i can tell you how to do it but ive got to go out now so dont have time at the minute. Let me know and ill explain later if you want.
