Overall this is a very impressive DVD collection. If you want to hear Rush in their prime and on some of their best tours, get this set. The music is awesome and the video quality is not bad considering. There are some funky video segments during some of the videos and you really wont find a better collection of classic live DVD's than this one. The soundtrack is just a CD version of the DVD from the Grace Under Pressure tour.

I wonder why videos reviews are always so short. I don't think you've convinced me to buy this box set and not another I had my eyes on. There's a huge track list but you say almost nothing to guys like me for example that are not much into Rush.

Yea well its really hard to say a lot, since there are similar tracks through all 3 DVD's. However there is a lot to watch as well, the total running time is a good 4 hours if not more, I am not sure exactly.

Neil's drum solo for The Rhythm Method is quite intense and very long might I add. His mix from the enormous drum kit includes melodies from his electric xylophone set and many double bass rhythms. The Grace Under Pressure show was filmed in Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens. The tours ran from 1981 to 1988 and A Show of Hands has been remastered for DVD from its original VHS form, although the original contained the song Lock & Key, which did not appear on this DVD and was originally the following tune after Force Ten. Lock and Key never made it onto the official CD release, so if you want to see it performed live, you would have to own the VHS.

Exit Stage Left was filmed in Montreal, Quebec in 1981 at The Forum, while A Show of Hands was recorded for album release and video in Bermingham England. Most of the tracks on A Show of Hands are the exact same for both the album and DVD, however some were recorded a few were recorded at other venues.

You can expect the usual amazing musicianship from the band. Alex plays a pile of different guitars through all 3 DVD's. A gear list was something like this for those who are curious:

Gibson SG Standard (red), Les Paul Goldtop (humbucker model), ES-335 (cream finish), 1175 Doubleneck (white).
Hentor Stratocaster copies (white and red) HSS configuration
Fender Super Strat HH w/Floyd Rose (black)
Ovation Classical & Adanis acoustic

Geddy Lee has used various basses over the years, primarily he used Rick's during the early years, he is noted for using the double neck bass/12 string guitar made by Rickenbacker during the early years which can be seen on Exit Stage Left, as well as one with a 6 string neck. He also used a Hentor Barbarian bass for a couple of songs as well as Fender Precision & Jazz Bass's and a Steinberger traveller bass.

That's much better Smashy! Now me, the potential buyer, starts to get a broader idea of what will go on on my screen if I decided to invest in Rush.

That bassist has a hell of a gear!

"Lock and Key" should have been included as a bonus track, like a collector item's strategy. Tho' for me, It'll have to be on my "I'll think about It" list for now.

I paid 30 bucks for it, down from 45 here in Canada, and it will probably drop sometime next year by a little bit. I really enjoy it, the CD is a nice addition if you want to listen to something live without having to watch a DVD, same goes for the R30 collection.

With the audio CD as bonus, that's pretty cheap!.

Talking about DVD I don't watch em so often tbh. The concerts have to be damn good to draw my attention. Like this 4 hours gig by Rush has to be very special to keep me interested.

On the other hand, i'm totally hooked to certain concerts I have in my collection and I couldn't stop watching when i'm in the mood but generaly, I get my kicks from audio CD's. I think that there's nothing better than a good live album (legit or bootleg)

(Video/DVD requires lots of attention which I don't always get. Depends on the weather wink.gif)

Each disc is between 70 and 90 minutes long roughly, so its actually more like 3 hours plus bonus features.

Yep. Amazing the amount they can put in those discs. I believe one DVD contains as much as 6 or 7 normal audio/video CD's. They were called VCD's back then in '99 when the first DVD's were released and that format is the bulk of my collection. They contain the same space than ordinary audio CD's. Then came the SACD but I don't have any. I wonder what comes next... we've made lots of progress since the good ol' VHS huh.gif
