Those new popups... How much of a family website is this now?

Now don't get me wrong, Rob. I like sexy women. I really do. I also understand that GTU is in need of funds, with the whole MPA lawsuit raging. But with those new sexy popups appearing on the forum front page I have come to think of an incident in Discussion. We all know Mannequin and his choice in signatures. He used to display pictures of sexy women, right? Well he was asked from gyr84me to remove them or he would get a suspension. He was eventually suspended for a while. The reason gyr84me asked mannequin to remove those pics was because GTU is considered to be a "family website". Now I was just wondering; how much of a family website is GTU when we have banners directing us to porn sites?

Cheers,
Jason

Edit: We had a PM conversation with Major and he suggested that most users use Firefox and Ad Block so that they can block the popups... But this is still no solution. What if we have to deal with a 9-year old entering the site because he/she thinks he/she can find tabs here (which I sincerely hope will be the case in the near future)? We surely can't demand from a 9-year old to know the difference between Firefox, Explorer or Opera.

I have to say, I haven't noticed any pop-ups either. I see ads at the top of the page though, but none of them are pornographic in nature.

For the record I'm running the latest version of Fire Fox.

Now that I've come home and using Firefox in my PC I can't see then either, but they were viewable from the SOLARIS systems in university.

-There are few, if any, pop ups on the forum. There is a slight possibility which a pop up may be displayed to you once per 12 (or 24?) hours. If you find another, it is unwelcome ph34r.gif , so please save the webpage source code and PM to me the domain from which the advertisement is loading.

-For the record, I carefully select filters which apply to all ad campaigns (yet sometimes ads which I think should be filtered DO get through... I then manually deselect them). One of these filters excludes 'adult/provocative' content. mellow.gif

Put those two points above together and I think...

1. the pop up was not filtered by the ad agency correctly
or
2. the pop up came from the website which linked you to GTU
or
3. the computer you used has adware or spyware installed on it (although I have not heard of that occuring much on Solaris)

But to err is human, if you can find any evidence that I am mistaken, please provide me those details and I will promptly resolve the issue. blush.gif

Best Regards,
Rob

Also for the record: The MPA (or, say, a future collapse of the online advertising world) will never drive me to take any actions which I believe would make this website unsuitable for family use.

Also, I used the term "popup" wrong, as I usually do. I was talking about banners, not popups.

Oh, I understand now. The 'filters' still do apply though.

The problem is that it's up to the ad agency to decide which banner ads should be marked "Adult/Provocative", etc. shifty.gif I'll give the campaigns a good manual look-through.

Also, if you or anyone else sees an ad and finds it offensive, please describe exactly what it looks like and, preferably, what product or website it advertises. That makes it much easier for me to go find the culprits (and even ban them from ever advertising here again!)

One ad is bugging me. It's an ad for a smiley website, but it's an audio one. And I'm in work, so it looks very weird to other folk in the office. I don't know the address as its a flash ad

Wow, I always choose the "Audio Ads" filter as well. I can't stand those. Especially since many people here as well as myself have their speakers cranked up very often. I'll try to track this down...

That is a very black and white issue (yet perhaps what's 'too provocative' is not). ANY audio in an advertisement is absolutely unacceptable here.

Cheers,
Rob

Having fun with all the crashing problems and stuff? IE7 is a terrible browser, you should have kept with 6, its better. However I use FireFox, but not for GTU because usually I am mobile when I am posting and FF takes up more battery power than IE6 for some reason. However I dont find the ads and banner's to be that offensive because I am pretty much a full blown adult now. However I agree that these mature ads should not be coming up, mind you I have only encountered this banner once and that was just a few minutes ago, but I agree that they should not be appearing, because not everyone uses FireFox, Opera or any of those non mainstream browsers. I have the latest version of FireFox with AdBlock Plus so sometimes I dont see the ads but still its not good if you have kids viewing the site.

Propably because of the add-ons.

Comcast channel 1 advertisement banner has sounds of police cars. I'll also PM, so you know.
