Well, before learning songs, I suggest learning power chords or regular chords. Knowing your way around the fretboard will really help when you do start learning songs.
Try starting with this. It's the beginners lesson to power chords.

Chording is the most important place to begin. A good tune for beginners that I often recommend is a simplified version of the old Hendrix (and others) tune "Hey Joe" because it uses all the simple open major chords in its repeating progression and therefore is a good one to practice chords and changing with. It's also a fairly decent tune and as the guitarist gets better it can be expanded around into as complex a version as one might want to do. Anyway, here's the basic tune below, and welcome to GTU.

Hey, Joe. Where you goin' with that gun in your hand.
Goin' down an' shoot my ol' lady. Caught her messin' round with another man.
Hey Joe, can you tell me where you gonna go?
Hey Joe, won't ya tell me where you gonna go?
I'm runnin' down to Mexico, find a place where I can be free.
Find a place where there ain't no hangman tryin' to put his noose around me.

I'm not sure I'm allowed to post some tabs on here, so I'll just put the link to a lovely little piece called Spanish Romance. It's easy but sounds really good.
