Hi Everyone,

I'm sorry but there was a minor problem with the hard drive on this server several days ago and I was (very inconveniently) out of town for a wedding. I did not notice that the forums were showing lots of errors. Please excuse the loss of some data or profile changes you may have submitted since last friday.

Hmm, why do things like these always seem to happen when I'm out of town?... thmbdn.gif

Again, I'm very sorry about inconveniencing you guys. Some new members may need to re-register.

Sincerely,
Rob

P.S. Don't worry though, no permanent damage was done!

It was an old forum that I think was made a couple years back during another previous "period of turmoil" for hardcore GTUers who needed a fix. Kind of like methadone or something. Anyway, like my wife says 3.4 times per week, it's good to see it back up again.

Rob some are freaking out that posts or threads are now missing. Am I correct to assume you had to restore from a fairly recent backup of the database? (Had to do the same thing once myself.... so I'm guessing that's what happened).

The only reason I did not fix it within 6-12 hours was that I was 6k miles from home for an old friend's wedding. It was not quite the most appropriate time to be working and monitoring gtu, ya know?

And, to clarify, there was no actual hardware broken or acting up. All that happened was that the hard drive was filled up 100% (because I make backups of everything very frequently). Next, the website was trying to run on a computer that had no free space on the disk. That makes for tough times... I find it ironic though that the reason why I had to USE a backup to restore data from 4 days earlier was because the disk got full SINCE I make so many backups (and keep them so long). Pretty silly.

Anyways, I feel bad about it, I let you guys down. I'll learn from my mistake and make some new programs for monitoring disk usage better blush.gif

Cheers,
Rob

Please don't - you are providing a free service that went away for an insignificant time.

Nobody got killed.

I'd like to take this opportunity to say "thank you" for all you have done - it immensely outweighs anything you didn't do.

Cheers Rob - you are appreciated.

Life is like a musical by Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Very popular and not as bad as some would have you believe. That is, unspeakably awful but mercifully brief.

How often is often when we area talking about backups, because every day seems like over kill to me, if I were doing that to my poor hard drives they would burn out pretty easily. I guess its stress testing when you do backup your data a lot.

laugh.gif I couldn't go "cold turkey!" Besides, I was getting so much done here in the office I had to find something to do!

In the "Scheme of Life' GTU being down a couple of days is nothing compared to the amount of help as well as a sense of camaraderie it gives to its members around the world. Rob deserves a great deal of credit for his continuing work and effort to maintain and improve the site.

My internet access is somewhat sporadic at the moment anyway (relocation) so I missed most of the downtime, still glad to see GTU back in action.
