Hi guys,

Just wanted to share with you the new love in my life. Last week I picked a special edition Maton EM225C acoustic/electric. It is custom made for the elleways music chain here in Australia and features an AP5 pickup (usually come on 325 and above models) as well as a stained, darker colour to it with gold hardware and a specially shaped headstock. I made a video just recording on a digital camera because I jsut felt so good about my new toy I wanted to share it with the world. Whilst I guess the sound recording isn't of the highest quality, you cna still hear the rich tone of the maton.

Please check out my clip and let me know what you think of both my guitar and playing.

(NB: Wasn't a perfect performance, I just wanted to record something asap.)

Cheers,
Chris

Congratulations, they're a great guitar. I have a '93 EM325c and my dad has one from the '80s, they sound great when they age. Does yours have the truss rod that you need a special tool to adjust or have they stopped doing that now? That's the only complaint I've ever had with mine.

The song was pretty cool too.

Um, I'm not exactly sure about the truss rod to be quite honest - have to check that out.

I have been looking at the possibility of buying a Maton Acoustic, but also the Coles Acoustic interests me as well, i have tried both, and they are as good as each other, so what made you choose Maton?

I take it you mean Cole Clark Acoustics? I tried both Matons and Cole Clarks and here is what I found:

1) Through a HK (real nice) PA System they both sounded very similar and very nice.

2) Un-plugged the Maton had a much bigger/louder sound which gave it a plus as I'm not always going to play the guitar plugged in.

3) Cole Clark was a guy who used to work FOR Maton, so, as a few sales people told me (who stocked both Matons and COle Clarks) the quality of Matons will be better due to the company being around for much longer. On this point, the build quality seems better on the Maton I purchased then on the Cole Clark. One example, the Cole Clark lacked internal bracing on the 90 degree angles where the face/back of the guitar joined the sides. So Maton's should have better durability or a better chance of withstanding a bit of a bump.

All in all they are both very nice guitars. I mainly checked out the Maton EM225/325C's and the Cole CLark Fat Ladies 1/2. In the end I went for my Maton because it sounded better unplugged, was unique being custom made for Ellaways, and Maton is a well respected name and many great players use them. Hope this gave you some insight Franky.

Can't be all that bad if Tommy Emmanuel uses them to death...literally LOL. That dude physically tears up his guitars due to his style. There's a man who has no concerns w/ denting up a new guitars. I'd love to see him play, I doubt I'd ever let him borrow one of my guitars though LOL

I have previously own a cole clark FL1AC and i thought it sounded fantastic when i bought it. I owned it for nearly 3 years, and it lost nothing in that time. I have recently bought a maton EM325C and found that there are pluses and minuses for both. Through my PA at gigs (wharfedale pro sm700) there is no comparison, the maton is leagues ahead. Excellent bass response and the trebles sound so full and clear that it's scary. As i play solo i find that the percussive qualities of a guitar (i.e. how much of a slapping sounds it makes when you mute and strum the strings) to be very important. The maton again is leagues ahead of the cole clark in this sense also. Whilst the maton is definitely the better guitar in my opinion, the cole clark is still an excellent instrument. The main thing i've found with the maton over the cole clark is that fact that, as the strings deteriorate (i'm currently using elixir polyweb 12s) the maton loses very little sound quality, in fact even when the strings are almost completely dead you can still pull off a gig with them. The cole clark however sounded very flat and bland as the strings started to die.

Before owning the cole clark i had an ashton nylon string piece of junk that my parents bought me as they were unsure as to whether or not i would keep up the lessons. I then bought the cole clark, then the maton and each time it was a step up. Reading other reviews, people have said they found the cole clarks to be quite muddy, however i'm yet to experience this. Honestly they're both excellent guitars and it's very much a personal preference once you get to this sort of level. I know i'm a bit of a fence sitter, but this is how i feel about the two. Hope this helps a bit and good luck with it all smile.gif !

First of all, welcome to GTU.

About a year or so ago I met and had a chance to sit around and play with an Australian guitarist named Fiona Boyes here in the US. She had a Maton acoustic (which I'd never played a Maton before) made with blackwood (which I'd never heard of before). It was an excellent guitar and I was pretty impressed. (Conversely, she loved my old 1934 Gibson Jumbo.) Anyway, it really was a nice sounding guitar. I'm sorry, but I don't know the model number.
Un-plugged is not the same as
never-was-plugged-in-to-begin-with.
