OK....perhaps this is a tad off the "bass subject", but relevant, nonetheless.

Recently some old bandmates of mine (circa 1980) got in touch and invited me to join them in a sort of "reunion" by doing some "long distance" recording. After hearing a few samples of other groups who are actively doing this, I decided "what the hell" and said "YES!!".

In order to accomplish this I, naturally, had to purchase a multi-track recorder. I bought the Yamaha AW16G 16 Track Hard Disk & CD Recorder LNIB and was curious if any of you guys have had any experience with either the machine itself, or long distance recording???

Now, I have to get my "home studio" up and running......... rolleyes.gif

Thanks!!

Sorry! Don't know about using such equipment. I record using computer software like ACID Pro only.

As for long distance, it can work. No reason it shouldn't. Go for it, you got nothing to lose.

Same thing as Mahrous. I use my computer to record trough a M-Audio Fast Track USB sound card and the Cubase SX software.

As for long distance recording, my keybord player send me his files trough email and it is a charm for me working on them at home.

Thanks guys!! I knew I could count on you two!!

Seriously though, I have always sort of been an analog guy in a digital world, if you know what I mean...I spent 15 years in and out of studios (some state-of-the-art, some not so) but even at that, they were ALWAYS tape....no such thing as digital - back in the "dark ages". So, I am a little (no ALOT!) out of my comfort zone, so to speak...

I will, however, figure this "technology" out, though!!!

Again, thanks guys!!

I wish I could give you any tips on the Yamaha but I have never seen such equipment in my life before. Don't even have any idea how it works.

But knowing Yamaha, I doubt it is mighty difficult to deal with. Does it give you editing options?

Or is it sound capture only?

Looks like a device my guitarist has. If that's the case you'll find out soon enough how to work it and the possibility are almost infinite. If i remember correctly it is the Yamaha DSR-8 but i'm really not sure about the name tho...

Despite my status as "whipper-snapper" I've used a fair number of tape recording devices, and the differences are fairly small. Most of what I've found is that you can spend hours rewinding and fast forwarding tape, accidentally punching in at the wrong moment, and not having the option to restore something you've recorded over. Not to mention the amount of tweaking you can't really do once you're on tape. With these new digital machines, you can not only avoid the hassles involved in rewinding the tape and EQing and whatnot, but also add in effects and cut and paste parts with great ease.

Hope that helps!!

Amen Brother!! The Yamaha AW16G is UNBELIEVABLE!! I never, in all my life, thought that it would be possible to literally have a recording studio in your own home. The things this little wonder can do are fantastic!! Unfortunately, I have yet to scratch the surface......

It does, indeed! Unfortunately, I was going about the transition from tape to digital all wrong. I was trying to compare the two and, it's not possible. So, I have had to "re-learn" and adapt to this "new-fangled" contraption....but man, it's fun!!

I don't know about that specific model, but I do know that some really interesting things can come out of long distance recording.
Ever heard of The Postal Service? They are so named because Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello sent recordings
to each other via the postal service. Their album went on to sent almost 1/2 a million copies.

I would honestly suggest a little boss digital recorder rather than Yamaha.
