what is a good drum head for the snare drum?
i am looking for a head that holds up the tone but isnt to harsh sounding
any ideas?

The tone of your drum is going to be affected a lot more by the actual drum than the head, if we're talking standard drum heads. If we're talking kevlar heads or something, then those will change the tone a lot.
I personally have used Remo Ambassadors, which sound pretty good, for batter heads, as well as Evans EQ3s and EQ4s. I like the 4s better, but I always use an EQ3 or 4 resonant head, which is where the meaty part of your tone comes from anyway. The batter head is really important for the attack sound, the "crack," as it were.
You also have to consider what type of snare you use. Different snares lend different characteristics, and the tension of the snare and the heads all affect the tone as well.
Incidentally, Evans EQ heads are very good to record with, in my opinion.
