With computers and midi it seems tab is about dated. I mean buying book's, Mag's etc. Power tabs and Guitar pro seem the way to go. Unless you are looking for a rare song not many people want to learn. And I have tried tabbing helping out where I can. Have computers outdated tabs books. When I first staring the surfing Internet back in 99 i was amazed how many tabs where on their. I drooled over a lot of them. I saw first the Rain Song by Led Zeppelin on there. Then i saw all the books that i owned. Metallic, Ozzy Yngwie and Magazine transcriptions as well. One point in my life I had over 100 tab books and 10 years of Magazines. Now I don't need them anymore. One I can figure most things by ear. But midi tabs are so much better specially if they have a backing bass and drum track. I love technology. How do you feel about tabs ?

I still buy tabliture books and look my tabs up online (not guitarpro format though). I find the books you buy are often more correct than what you'll find online, but that the ones online can really help you out if you just want to start. I don't use midi tabs, though, so I guess I'm not too keen on how well that works. Playing along with the song has always worked fine for me.

I found Power tabs are better than Guitar Pro. But if you listen to my soundclick most of my backing tracks come from Guitar Pro. And most of the songs are very close to the originals. Their are some bad tabs. If they are on guitar pro they usually don't have a backing midi track. i learned to new Yngwie songs this week from guitar pro. I am living a dream I have always wanted. I am playing along with a back up band shredding like hell . Its great. Its not like playing with a real band but, I don't have to carry my equipment around and nobody is complaining about the music that they want to play or don't . I am digging this.

Me to, i prefer all the guitar parts on 1 sheet if possible. I use backing tracks off guitarbt, as it seems more realistic.

I dont think tab will ever completely be a thing of the past. I mean, I like the internet but I cant fit my computer in a guitar case.

I don't read tab in public. But having a midi tab is much more practical. If it is transcribed right . And I have seen a ton of books wrong to. Just not internet tabs are wrong. One example is Cherry Lanes Van Halen 1 the Eurption tapping solo is on the 3 string when Ed plays it on the second . But it is really preference .

I find tab can help, but a youtube video guitar lesson showing up close video on the guitar neck while they play is way more enjoyable. Also when you compare a tab in a book that you buy compared to sheet music printed off the internet you can see differences.

Another excellent idea is http://www.ShowMeHowToPlay.com which is a software video with a 4 pc band showing the drums, bass, rythem guitar and solo guitar or keyboard and each can be viewed how the song is being played, muting of instruments, etc.

Also RiffsandBeyond.com or thenextlevelguitar.com Youtube guitar lesson by David. Most of Davids lessons from nextlevelguitar.com have been removed and from his website the song video lessons have been removed from copyright problems.

Tabs are still good, you can always print it and read it later with your guitar in your hands. Not a thing of the past IMO, just that I am afraid it will become considering the fighting for legal rights.

Tab have never really interested me. I've used them a couple of times when I really wanted to learn a part I was stumped on, but for the most part I've always tried to figure things out by ear or used standard notation. I think they can be a useful short hand for short parts I don't have an interest in using them for everything. I guess if I was into learning covers more I would use them more for thing I had trouble figure out myself. I think it's better to make a good effort to learn by ear and get as much of it that you can that way before falling back on tabs. I think that's better than just relying on tabs.

+1 that's about where I am w/ tabs. Personally, I hate using tabs. I just prefer the lyrics and chords.....I'll figure out my own "lead" and melody.

I used to be awed at guys that were hardcore tabbers. Back in high school, the standard that you were rated on was how close can you sound to the original. In many ways, it still is but I realized that these "dudes" couldn't really "play". They just copied very well.

Tabs are a crutch!! Learn to play by ear! It's not hard!! Especially with a CD. Just pause and rewind till you find the perfect note! And usually leads are by note scales! So if you know your chords, you know the "rules" to following a chord!

"It is true, that which I have revealed you; there is no God, no universe, no human race, no earthly life, no heaven, no hell. It is all a dream - a grotesque and foolish dream. Nothing exists but you. And you are but a thought - a vagrant thought, a useless thought, a homeless thought, wandering forlorn among the empty eternities."

It is hard. What is easy to one may not be as simple for another. Anything you use then by your definition would be a "crutch".

Tabs, muwsic notation, powertabs, whatever...if it helps then all the power to ya....if it doesn't then don't bother w/ it.

I don't like tabs but I've used them for certain passages. since you can get the same pitch in 3 different places on a guitar, sometimes fingerings helps yo see what's going on.

Sitting and hitting pause/rewind on a CD to learn is probably the most inefficient way to learn.

I like the authenticity of the books, you can put a little more faith into them being correct obviously.

Saying that however - The net is great for tabs too and my guitar case is full of print outs of loads of different songs just incase I ever decide to have a good old sing song up at my mates after a jam or practice.

There's surely enough room to accommodate both in your lives.

I agree with everyone who loves printed tabs smile.gif
My eyes just get tired when I use computer too much. And if I run into a book that contains a tab that I was looking for - I will buy it, because there will be no need to search for it in the web.
But the truth is simple - I have tons of guitar-pro files and just a few books.

Well i used tabs on the computer when i started...
I try to find a book now and then, but i live in a small town, and you rarely find anything you want here....
I can really work with guitar pro, or gutiar tux or anything..

I tend to bring the tempo down because i can't catch up at first, then i get to confused after trying to bring the tempo up a bit...

I still use normal tabs, =],
