Bent for me by Delfy.

This mad, small (2.5 x 2 x 1") box is basically a two voice synthesizer with 2 voltage controlled oscillators putting out a basic square wave. One is connected to a photoresistor which is basically a light sensor, you could move your hand to block the incoming light for theremin-esque interaction. The more light you let in, the higher the pitch will go. Then there's the "body contacts", but I prefer to call them "two screws placed upright in the box". These are touch responsive, when you touch them a second square wave comes in which you can harmonize with the first one, or just add for more mad noise, yo. The strange bit is that the pitch of this one goes higher when you apply more pressure, which means you end up with sore fingers since you're pressing against non-budging metal.

Added a small soundclip where all the sounds apart from the drumbeat (which as usual I sequenced in Logic) came from this device, hooked up to other fun things such as a Electro-Harmonix Micro Synthesizer, a reverb tank and a vocoder.

I can see this thing having use somewhere in the backdrop of mixes. Anyways, it's too daft to be taken seriously, but I love it! smile.gif

Daft soundclip for people still reading

I've really tried to like the opto-electronic tone generators (IE aleisis air synth for example) but I have yet to find one that is sensitive enough to allow me to actually get attached.
I do like the coupled IR beam/ sensor arrays like on the air harp and the terribly misnamed laser midi interface.

Hows that midi thermine working for you?
Just an idea... Not an actual serving suggestion.

I gave up on using that in a musical context, i.e.: trying to make notes with it. It's MIDI output can be used to much more fun stuff. A friend of mine is a sound designer and programs his own software towards the sound modifying extent. There's this great time stretcher he built to use with the theremin which means you can halt a sound by holding your hand in mid-air, play it backwards or forwards by adjusting distance and adjust the playbackspeed with your movement. Funnn. happy.gif

About $ 40, which coming to think of it is a lot for such a toy... but they've been selling for well over 100...

He's got a new gizmo which looks just as much fun: YooToob vid

I like that SSVC-1 unit, that would be slick to have. Do they run on batteries or are they powered with a supply? I would imagine they are compatible with guitars though? I can't seem to figure out how you would run inputs and outputs cause it seems they only have one jack

I don't think it takes any input, just has an output.

The photoresistor synth only has a 1/4" output, seeing how it's basically a two voice sawtooth generator.

The SSVC-1 also has a similar device built-in, which can be hooked up to the FX processing section (that's what the short patch cord that seems to plug in itself does), you could, of course, just plug a guitar in instead. The mic input is 1/4" too, and not XLR, btw.

im well impressed with it for background noise, could you run this through a pitch correction plugin (i read on harmony of someone using one with a thermine) to give you something more controlable? coz that would look well cool

That's something that's been bothering me too. The pitch control. There I was all happy going "listen! i'm harmonizing the second wave in a perfect fifth to the first one! Let's find out what notes I'm playing!" to realise I was somewhere in between cracks. I could run it through a pitch corrector though, or detune the guitars... something to think about. MEH.

Wouldn't using a 1/4 inch jack for a microphone effect the sound quality? I heard that using a converter kills the volume of a microphone by using the 1/4 inch jack instead of a XLR

Well it shouldn't affect sound quality when taking the signal out of a mixing panels send channel so you can still pre amp and EQ the vocal signal to warm it up. For condenser mics you'll need the phantom power anyways.

I like how I talk about 'warming up' signals so you can completely destroy them afterwards! happy.gif
